I drove all night

Janet
"Oh my god it's only one thirty in the morning!" Janet exclaimed after waking up from a deep sleep.
It's been lonely for Janet since Phillip's been gone. He went on 50 dozen business trips befor, why was this so different? She knew what made her feel this way though. She was 7 months pregnant with her second child and already feeling the before-labor anxiety.

'I know I'll check on Nicky and just go through the baby name book one more time.' Janet thought to herself.

There was always something about watching her son sleep that soothed her, calmed her down. She stepped into the six-year old's room full of Hess trucks and basketball merchandise. She sat in the beanbag chair next to his bed and just stared at him. He was a beautiful boy. He was skinny with dark brown hair and nearly-black eyes. Just like his mommy. After about 20 minutes, she kissed her son and went back to her bedroom.

When she got there she got out the baby names book and layed back down. She already had ideas about what to name it if it was a boy or girl. If it was a boy she was going to name him Hunter. If a girl, she was going to name it Paige. She still looked through it hoping something else would grab onto her. Not tonight though.

Jack
I've seen her in a somkey room.
I smell her wine & cheap perfume.

Jack hummed the song to himself as it was 2:00 in the morning and he couldn't go back to bed. He had an awful time going to bed recently. Maybe it was stress? The restaurant's doing great but it could be a handful.

"What's the matter Jack?" Vicky rolled over and asked him.

"Nothing, darling, go back to bed."

"You worry me sometimes, you know."

"You don't have to worry it's all okay."

"If it is than why don't you get more sleep?"

"I don't know, babe." Jack said irratedly and walked up to get some hot cocoa.

'I can't believe I'm turning into Mr. Roper.' Jack thought to himself.

He was too, he always had to have cocoa before bed. Not only that but he didn't even want to do it with Vicky anymore. It wasn't Vicky's fault. He loved her with every bone in his body. He just couldn't be bothered to get it on anymore.

The noise from the microwave made him get out of his own head. While he began to think of a girl he used to know...

"Jack!" Janet squealed as she realized Jack's voice.
"Hey sweetie, how are you?God it must have been 5 years since we've seen each other. How's Nicky? I haven't seen him since he was a baby."
"He's good, he's good. Got some news for ya, the stork's gonna be flapping his wings again."
"Your'e pregnant?"
"Yep. Number 2."
"Lucky! I want to have a baby."
"Come on, Jack, the great womanizer can't get a girl a bun in the oven."
"Well, I'm NOT that dude anymore. I'm a husband now. Can't even get it up."
"Sorry, honey."
"It's okay baby. I'm sorry too."
There was a pause for a moment and they got back to talking again.
"How's Phillip?"
"Oh, he's okay he went to Syracuse, New York for a new art gallery opening. How's Vicky?"
"She's good too. She went to Florida for a week to see her dad. Hate the guy."
Giggling, Janet hears Nicky calling upstairs from his bedroom.
"Honey, I have to go. I have to get Nicky in bed."
"Oh, okay, tell him I said hi."
"Ok, darling. See ya."
"Bye."
With the hanging up, Jack remembered something. Janet gave him a birthday card a couple of years ago. He kept all his old stuff in the garage. While looking through a few boxes he found what he was looking for. A fat, robin's egg blue envelope with a return address on it that said:
Janet & Phillip Dawson
600 Shields Blvd.
Bakersfield, CA
He checked his watch and he looked at his Mercedes Benz and thought can I pull it off tonight?
He ran through his house, grabbed a suitcase, stuffed it with nessecary items, and otu back in the garage in record time.
He was going to Bakersfield to see Janet.

11:00 and still on the road. jack was getting tired now. He had been on the freeway for what seemed like forever. They had 2 accidents. Stupid a-holes. He started flipping through the channels and the perfect song came on.
I had to escape
The city was sticky and cruel

The long, stright road ahed

I drove all night...
It wasn't too long after the song had finished he was in Bakersfield. He would have just gone to Janet's right away but the fact that he could disturb her son made him not dare.
He checked at a nearby hotel and crashed. He was beyond tired. So tired he slept right through until noon. Crap! He hurrridly checked out and went on driving until he came across Shields Blvd. Turns out Janet lived in a beautiful 2 story Stucco-style home. Garden and all the fixings. He always knew Janet would become the next Martha Stewart (when it came to gardening).
He got out of the car and walked up the driveway. His heart beating faster and faster as he stepped onto the steps and rang the doorbell. A familiar face answered the door.

"Holy crap! Jack Thomas Tripper!"
"Holy crap! Janet Eileen Dawson!"
Jack and Janet hug each other in amazement. It's been so long. It was a shock to Janet because of him showing up without warning. Jack was amazed because he never saw Janet pregnant before. He hoped she didn't notice him staring at her swollen belly and breasts.
"Bump or cleavage, Jack?"
"Bumpage." Crap!
Janet hust laughed it off. She knew there was still some womanizer in him. She hugged him again. Jack placed his hands on her face and kissed her lips. Janet moaned a good moan. It was good to feel some love. Even though Nicky gave her a kiss before bed every night.
Janet took Jack's hand and led him into the living room.
"Well, this is my home. It's a little messy. I've been so tired The baby's been kicking all night. Oh, would you like something to drink? It's, like, lunchtime. Want to eat?"
"No thanks, I had a sandwich at the hotel and a coke."
"Oh, okay. Can I show you the rest of the house?"
"Sure that would be nice."
The first place they stopped was in the kitchen. They had a nice oak wood floor to match the bar and cupboards. Janet got a jumbo size bag of Wavy Lays before showing him the downstairs bathroom and den. Then upstairs there was another bathroom and Nicky's room, the bedroom Janet and Phillip share, and the baby's nursery.
"Your home is really nice." Jack complimented as they walked down the stairs.
"Thank you. I try to keep it all together." She meant that house wise and emotionally wise. She felt so overwhelmed she felt like crying. But she didn't.
A couple of hours go by and Janet becomes startled.
"Oh god! It's 3:00. I have to pick up Nicky from the bus stop.!"
"I'll go with you."
"No you stay here. You can be a suprise for him."
"Okay."
She was out in the driveway in no time. She hated the thought of leaving Jack alone in the house. 'Stop worrying' she told herself 'Jack is a grown man'. As she got in the car she expierienced sharp pains in her stomach. 'It's nothing.'
While Janet was away, Jack snuck up the stairs to look at the baby's nursery again. Everything was in ducky(the animal anyway). The wallpaper was in ducky, the bedsheets& blankets, even some of the wardrobe pieces. The rest of the wardrobe contained of white, orange and yellow onesies and whit socks. The pair of baby black converse were hysterical. Being in the room made him feel uneasy. It was not the fact that he had no children of his own. He just sensed something was not right...

"Mommy!" Nicky exclaimed when he and Janet walked in the house.
1. "We have a visiter, Nicky."
"Him?" Nicky pointed to Jack
"Yes, darling. That is Jack Tripper. Don't you remember me telling you stories about living with him in Los Angeles before mommy had you?"
'She told him stories?' Jack thought. 'I don't even wanna know.'
"Oh yeah. Now I remember. You're the one who were always chasing mommy and the other girls."
'Thanks alot, Jan.'
Jack laughed it off and so did Janet. He was so cute how could you be mad at him? Jack gives and gives him a hug. At the same time Jack notices Janet is in pain.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, um Nicky, why don't you play outisde for a while?"
"Okay mom!"
Once he leaves the room. Janet replies to Jack.
"Honey, I have been feeling pains, like the labor ones. I don't know I think I should go to the hospital."
"Well, maybe you should I have my car and..."
"Oh, geez. That was a big one. Ohhh."
"OK, let's go now."
"What about Nicky?"
"Bring him with us."
"No! Are you crazy? This could traumatize him. Go call Kelly."
"Kelly?"
"Yeah, Kelly Clark. She lives next door and we babysit each other's sons on and off. Oh you know what? I'll call. Why don't you get my suitcase out of my bedroom?"
"Ok."
They were on their way to the hospital with Jack driving and Janet giving him directions. There was some traffic but not a lot. When they got there, the doctor was waiting for them in the lobby.
Janet got wheeled into the third floor maternity ward and Jack took a seat in the waiting room. He had a copy of Time magazine and a lot of impatience. Then the news came on the t.v.
"The girl in the red camero, Christmas Snow was transfered to Goodrich Fellows Medical Center with a critical head injury."
'Oh my god Chrissy is here!'

Why thank you! Here goes Chapter 6!
"Excuse me, Mr.Tripper," the redheaded doctor lady came over to him.

"Yeah," he replied it was the first word he can get out since watching the news.

"I'm Dr.Katrina Cloonan. I'm Janet's baby doctor. She went into labor early. What we are going to do is induce her. We feel it best to get the baby out right away."

"Ok, thank you. Where can I find out where other people are staying in the hospital?"

"Patient-wise?"

"Yes, please."

"Go talk to Bridget over there." Dr. Cloonan pointed out to a plus size black woman.

"Ok, thank you."

Just as Dr. Cloonan went back to the delivery room, Jack went to see Bridget. She looked intimadating, but she was very sweet.

"Hey baby," she said in a heavy southern accent. "What can Bridget do for you?"

"Well, Bridget, can you please tell me where a Christmas Snow is staying, please."

"Well, sure thing sugar," she paused for a few minutes to look on the computer. "She be stationed at the second floor. First door on the left."

"Thanks, Bridge."

"Yo' welcome!"

He got back on the elevator. He couldn't believe it. What a g.d day! First Janet goes into premature labor and Chrissy got in an accident. He got off and began to feel really nervous. It's been like forever since he's seen Chrissy. He finds Chrissy in the room with a Mexican doctor.

"Christmas," he said in a heavy Mexican accent. "What are your parents' names? Please concentrate."

"Chrissy?" Jack went over to go kiss her but the doctor interrupted.

"And who are you?"

"I'm Christmas Snow. I told you that!"

"Not you, Christmas, him."

"Who's he?" Jack's heart broke.

"Chrissy, it's me Jack."

"I'm Dr. Escevedo and I want to know what you are doing here."

"Jack, oh you've come to rescue me!" she said giving Jack a huge hug.

"Jack, I'm trying to work with Christmas on her memory. You can come back when I'm done."

"Nobody calls me Christmas. Everyone calls me Chrissy. I won't answer anymore questions until you call me Chrissy!"

"Fine, Chrissy. Who are your parents?"

"Reverend Joseph and Mary Snow. Happy?"

"Dancing on the ceiling. Now do you have any siblings?"

Jack walked out of the room. Poor Chrissy. It must be hard not having much of a memory. Even though she really didn't have one to begin with.

Jack made it up to the third floor when a Japanese nurse uniform came rushin got him.
"Jack Tripper?"

"I'm him? Is Janet in trouble?"

"We are giving her an emergency c-section. Janet wants you with her. Dr. Cloonan told me to go get you."

It wasn't long before he was taking the nurse's hand. 'Holy Mary, Jesus, and the shepard's' he thought to himself 'I am so not ready for this.' 'What if the baby or Janet dies? I can't be there to face that!' With his newly developed panic attack, he wished he had some Paxil.

"Did you find him, Alexis?" Dr. Cloonan asked the nurse who found Jack.

"Yes, Katrina, he's right here."

"Oh, hello again," Dr. Cloonan said shaking his hand. "Are you going to be okay?"

"I sure hope so."

"You'll be okay."

Jack walks over to Janet and kisses her on the forehead. "You'll be okay." He reassured her.

"Oh, Jack, what about the baby?"

"It'll be okay too."

"But what if it isn't? If she dies, I want to go with it!"

"Don't talk that way! What about Phillip and Nicky? Nicky needs his mother and Phillip needs you!"

"Okay, Janet, we are going to start now," Dr. Cloonan announced.

Both Jack and Janet took deep breaths. Who knew what could happen? When Dr. Cloonan cut the incesion, Janet cried out with pain. Jack kissed her to ease her pain. The pushing was painful and uncomfortable as hell. Jack felt sick to his stomach but didn't show it. He saw how emotionally shook up Janet was and needed to be strong for her. He thought of Chrissy to distract him. That didn't really make him feel better. Then he heard crying...

"Congratulations, it's a girl!" Dr. Cloonan announced.

Janet didn't get to see her newborn daughter.

Right after she came out, they rushed her into the incubator. Sh e was small from what the nurses told her. She was only 2 pounds 16 oz and 12 inches long. The baby couldn't really breathe on her own.

"Oh my god," Janet sobbed to Jack. "What did I do? Why did this happen to my baby?"

Jack lays next to her in the bed, hugs her and kisses her lips, cheeks, and forehead.

"You are a fantastic mother. God just made it this way because he is testing you. Don't ask me why. You just have to roll with the punches on this. There really isn't much you can do."

"Can you do me a favor?"

"Anything, darling."

"Please, call Phillip. Tell him I'm here. Then go get Nicky and bring him here."

He kisses her lips one last time. "You've got it, sweetheart."

Ready for more? Sure hope so.
"Can I speak to Phillip Dawson please?" Jack asked on a collect call to Syracuse.

"Hello?" Phillip answered.

"Phillip? It's me Jack. Remember I used to live with Janet in L.A? Walked her down the aisle?"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. I remember."

"Well, I'm in Bakersfield with her."

"What the hell are you doing there and with Janet?"

"Listen Phil, she had her baby and you have got to be here."

"Are you putting me on?"

"No. Why in God's name would I make this up?"

"I don't know. Okay I'll be there. Tell Janet I love her and I'm coming home."

"Okay, bye."

"Bye, thanks."

He walks back to Janet's room. She is crying. The sight of her own emotional turmoil is making him begin to cry. 'Poor baby' is all he can think. Janet notices his entrance.

"Did you call him?" She asked still letting the tears fall down.

"Yes I did, darling."

"Thank you."

"Baby, don't cry. It going to be all right." Jack goes over to her and lifts her chin with his hand.

"Jack, my baby is dying."

"Stop thinking that way!"

"I have a right to mourn!" She pushes Jack's hand away, rolls over, and bawls again.

Jack leaves her alone for the time being. He should go get Nicky, but not right now. He goes down to see Chrissy. Hopefully she is there alone.

"Hey sweetie," Jack goes over to Chrissy and caresses her face.
"Hi, Jack."

"You remembered."

"My memory is getting a little better. The doctor says I can go home in a few days."

"That's good."

"You know, Janet's here. She's upstairs."

"She is with Larry?" She asked wide-eyed as usual.

" No. She's in the hopital. Here."

"Oh. Is she okay?"

"Yeah," he somewhat lies. "She just had her second baby."

"Really? You think I can see it?"

"If the doctor's say it's okay."

As if on cue, a doctor walked in. Not the Mexican but an African American.

"How you doin' Chrissy?" he asked.

"Dr. Baxter, do you think I can go for a walk with him?"

"If you promise not to leave hospital grounds."

"We won't. C'mon Jack."

"Thanks."

Chrissy has been in the hospital for 2 days. It was good not to look at the same four walls. This was exciting. She was going to see Janet's newborn. There was always something about babies that gave her hope.

"I have to warn you, Chrissy. Janet's baby was born premature. This might come as a shock."

They go up to the baby's room. The one with the premies. "She's over here," Jack says when the come up to the incubator that says "Baby Dawson". Turns out the little baby girl had a ball of white blonde hair, blue eyes, and was barely crying. 'She is a little baby girl buddha.' Jack thought.

Chrissy and Baby Dawson looked almost identical.
