Here's another encouraging one from USA Today:

Things are looking up on Wisteria Lane.
That's good news indeed for those Desperate Housewives fans who have been hoping the show can recover from its deep sophomore slump. No, Sunday's third-season premiere is not Desperate at its best, but it's better than most anything the show had to offer last year, particularly at the start.

The most notable achievement of the episode, written by Marc Cherry and Jeff Greenstein, is the way it sidesteps so many of last year's early mistakes. Where last season's central mystery was imposed on the neighborhood from the outside, this year's story — what is Orson (Kyle MacLachlan) up to? — is hot-wired into the housewives themselves.

Having run down Mike (James Denton), Orson now wants to marry Bree (Marcia Cross). That should provide plenty of opportunities for Bree's friends to come to her assistance. And by the end of the hour, it already feels as if they've spent more time together than they did most of last year.

Though Bree is center stage tonight (a spot Cross holds very well), everyone is busy. Susan is caring for Mike while weighing an offer from a new man, a conflict that gives Teri Hatcher a genuinely funny, rather than forced, sight gag. Edie is trying to sell Paul's house; Lynette is dealing with Tom's love child; and Gaby is battling the pregnant, English-challenged Xiao Mei. ("You've been in this country a year. Modify your nouns.")

Still, as wise as the writers were to rid themselves of last year's plot, that's the easy part of the equation. The harder mistake to overcome is the damage the show did to its main characters — allowing them to behave in ways that made them seem weak, selfish, stupid and, at times, despicable. Here are three steadfast rules for TV behavior: We do not seduce our parents' dates; we do not dump our children by the side of the road; and we do not, whatever the provocation, burn down a house without checking to see if anyone is inside.

It will take more than one good episode to win us back after all that. But it's certainly a good place to start.

Thumbs up

WOW... that was awesome! Amazing cliffhanger as well(even though I had seen spoilers). Laurie Metcalf is still great after all these years. Nora is going to grate on nerves pretty quickly and Carlos and Gaby's scenes seemed boring, but I LOVED the interaction with Xiao-Mei. I loved the Bree stuff(the orgasm part was especially hilarious). The scene with Susan talking to a comatose Mike was very sad. Edie trying to sell that house , and best of all The Applewhites are GONE!!!! I can't wait to see where the Orson mystery goes!!!

It's back!

I find it so odd that people always mention the Applewhites as if they were the problem last year. If anything, I think that Lynette's storyline suffered the most. The going back to work thing was terribly boring, and now her story revolves around Nora, who is a complete pain. In looking at the season 2 dvds, the best episodes used the Applewhites more ("One More Kiss", "There's Something About A War", and the best part of "Silly People" was the Bree/Betty storyline). IMO, each one of the characters suffered from writing flaws in the second season (except Gabrielle). One storyline (The Applewhite story) did not ruin an entire season.

I loved it! Bree and Gabby were the best tonight. I liked Susan dropping the drink, lol. Orson is CREEPY. I LOVED the opening scene! And that scene with Bree and Orson...perfect and too funny.

Football got killed!

"Desperate Housewives" premiered to a 14.6/21 on ABC at 9 p.m. The season premiere of CBS' "Cold Case," 9.7/14, edged "Sunday Night Football," 9.6/14, for second. FOX stayed in fourth with "Family Guy," 5.7/8, and "The War at Home," 4.0/6. "Top Model" held steady for The CW.

Classic Susan moment with the drink.

Bree and Orson should be a good mystery this year. Although I can't believe Bree has never had an orgasm before. I flashback to season 1 with the marriage counselor in which she gives a detailed speech insistig that in very blunt terms that she had no problem with sex.

Gabrielle and Carlos go from hot to cold on practically a week to week basis. Will have to keep an eye on this one.

Tom's new family can only lead to chaos. Should be agood story there.

Edie trying to sell that house was brilliance. Nothing went right for her.

That's great for the NY Post, but now for me. The Premiere wasn't anything special. It had it's moments, but I know there are better Housewives epuisodes out there, and hopefully, to come.
