It's the episode where Beaver asks Don Drysdale "Do you spit in your glove?"

That was the punishment that he gave the boys for making prank calls on the phone. He lectured Beaver, Gilbert, and Allen, about how all of them were too old to be playing games on the phone. June pointed out how people could be inconvenienced in an emergency because of these pranks. "What if someone needed an ambulance?" She asks Beaver.

The stretch might have been Ward being upset with the boys using the phone without his permission. But I think it was more because it wasn't a local call and than Beaver and his friends tried to cover up what they did. So he made them do yard-work until they earned enough money to pay for the call. Maybe the bill had been paid off. But Ward still wanted the boys to be responsible by finishing the yard-work they had started.

Ward and June were both out, as was Wally when the telephone plot was hatched...Wally came home during the crank calls, and the three boys acted like nothing was happening...

Beaver was originally against the idea of making a long distance call, but was goaded into it... Gilbert and the other kid offered to pay for it...Gilbert had a quarter, and the other kid had $0.75, and they figured a dollar would be enough ... and the call turned out to be more than $9.00 altogether, because they held on while Don Drysdale finished his shower...

Duh, cuz the little brats owed him money, and back then you did things like pay people back...Also, it was not out of the ordinary to punish your childrens freinds as well as your own.

Good point. We tried not to do embarrassing things usually more for for our friends' (parents) sake than our own !!
