There had always been a rivalry behind the scenes between Penny Marshall and
Cindy Williams. Finally in 1982 Cindy Williams, who was pregnant, left the series.
Her character married an army medic who was sent overseas. Laverne alone
couldn't compete with THE A-TEAM on NBC, and the show left the air after
seven seasons the following spring.

By the way, like I LOVE LUCY (which producer Garry Marshall admitted was an
influence), L & S was also a hit abroad. There was a problem, though, in
Thailand because the Thai people don't like "fresh" women. So, before each
episode was aired on Thai TV, the following blurb flashed across the screen:
THESE WOMEN ARE FROM AN INSANE ASYLUM.

it was Season 8 when Laverne was left alone. Season 7 is when they moved to California, together.

Actually, the girls moved to California in Season 6 (1980-81). It probably was announced at the end of Season 5, but I haven't seen it in quite some time and can't remember for sure.

Actually, if I can add something to your post, TV Star Collector --

The rivalry between CW and PM had been a big behind-the-sceens mess during the height of the show's popularity, but the two actresses had mended fenses and were back on good terms at the time of Cindy's departure.

According to a 1982 TV Guide article, CW had an oral agreement with the producers that they would write her pregancy into the show.

She claimed that once she began showing, they went back on their word, saying that since the show took place in the more conservative 1960's (and the fact that Shirley was always preceived as a virgin) that having her be an unwed mother might hurt the show's ratings.

She called this a cowerdly excuse on the behalf of the show, and that is what prompted her to ask to be released from her contract. She expected a court battle (similar to the one Farrah Fawcett endured when she decided to leave "Charlie's Angels") but surprisinly, the producers released her without much of a fight.

Going into the last season, Penny Marshall did not want to continue. She had hoped that the departure of Cindy Williams would mean that ABC would cancel the show, but she was contractually obligiated to complete the final season against her better judgement. She did insist that the keep the title "L & S" however.

The above poster is right---Penny *didn't* want the show to continue without Cindy, but was obligated to under contract. Cindy's departure had little to nothing to do with any rivalry between her and Penny. And yes, their friendship was mended by the time Cindy left. Cindy was angry not at Penny, but at the show's producers.

If she actually gave birth, it must be a matter of public record. Someone can look it up.

Cindy Williams had a daughter in 1982 with her then husband, Bill Hudson--Kate Hudson's father. Cindy later had a son with Hudson. Per IMDB.com, she divorced Hudson in 2000.

Right. At the very end of Season 5, Frank and Edna had already moved to California. Laverne and Shirley lose their jobs at Shotz (automation casualties), and they decide to move also. They say goodbye to the empty basement apartment. And Laverne paints something on the back of their old apt. door, seen when it closes for the last time.

And of course, in true sitcom tradition, all their friends just uprooted their lives and followed them there! Just like in real life.

I think once they took the show out of Milwaukee, it was over. They were two working girls from a midwestern town. Now they were just two starstruck bimbos.

I remember reading a TV Guide article in 1982 that gave the first exposure that all was not well on the L&S set. I don't recall it saying that Penny & Cindy had resolved their conflict:

I believe they have since reconciled and may possibly be friends or acquaintances today.
