What are the most memorable or shocking news events that have happened in your life?

Okay, there have been a lot of news events in recent years. What are the ones that have been the most memorable, shocking, or have touched your life the most?

Here's my list in no particular order.

1) The Oklahoma City Bombing (1995)

2) The shootings at Columbine High School(1999)

3) The Space Shuttle Challenger explosion (1986) Know this happened in the 80's, but ask anyone who was a teen then and they'll tell you it was a BIG deal.

4) Hurricane Andrew hits south florida. (1992) I lived through this monster of a storm. August 24, 1992 is a day that i'd rather forget, but can't.

5) John Lennon's murder (1980)

6) Princess Diana's Death (1997)

7) Prince Charles and Princess Diana's Wedding (1981)

8) The Gulf War (1991)

9) The Florida Marlins win their 1st World
Series (1997) Go, Fish!

10) The siege on the Branch Davidian Compound
in Waco. (1993) I saw this thing happen
live on CNN. Talk about riveting and shocking TV!

11) The Turning of the Millennium (1999-2000)
Sure, it was a lot of hype, but it was a
lot of fun.

The one that is most memeorable is :
The Rodney King Riots -1992

That affected Los Angeles pretty much and since i was little i don't remember much, buti do remember that they told people that they couldn't leave their homes and stuff like that.

Princess Diana's Death. I was small then but I still remember seeing the smashed in car on tv...How sad. I will always remember this... Also where I was when the WTC was hit = Math Class, 4th period, playing a game to introduce ourselfs, looking through window....

You may laugh at this but I clearly remember the night country singer Conway Twitty died.
I was doing an all night country music show on a radio station in Virginia when at 2:45 I made the announcememt about his death. Had 145 phone calls. I remember one woman calling me telling me her employer sent everyone one for the night because they were so upset.

I also remember when Elvis died in 1977 ( I was 9 at the time ). I was at a now defunct Safeway store with my mom when they announced over the pa that he was found died at Graceland. The next day I remember we had a woman in town hat actually killed herself becuase of this. She wrote in her suicide letter that she couldnt live without Elvis.

The strange part was that I myself didnt know who Elvis was. I was more into Kiss and Abba at that time.

I was in Math class too..we were learning about the quadratic formula...it was a day 1 and so it was period C...so then the guidance counselor came in and told us about it. My geometry teacher already knew about it but he wasn't supposed to tell us. Then like 6 people had to go call their parents (either cause their parents were flying or because they worked in the WTC) within a half hour, a good 10% of the school was picked up by their parents...by the end of the day 1/2 the school was gone.

I haven't lived a very long life so far. I am only 15 years old and have not had the opportunity to experience (or remember) many of the big news events that many of you have. However, I think that there are two that will prominantely stick in my mind, with the first being the very recent World Trade Center attacks. I think I'll always remember that I was just getting out of Math and, for no particular reason but to say HI, I went to my Science teachers class room (he is my fourth hour teacher). I looked at the TV and on it was CNN and some words were on the bottom of the screen that said something like "Two Plans Hit Twin Towers of World Trade Center". I didn't know what to make of it at the time. I thought maby it was old coverage or something (again, I've lived a short life, I have no idea what has gone in the world LOL). So, I'm outside on my way to my Spanish room in a portable and then a student looks to me and simply asks "Did you hear about the World Trade Center?" and I simply replied, remembering what I saw on the television, "Yes." We had a test in Spanish that day. We watched the news for a few minutes before the test, then took it, and turned the news back on. Before the test there was still one tower standing, however, afterwards, we only saw one large thing of ash and smoke. The second one was down. We watched news all hour in Science, and had it on during lunch (however, we couldn't hear it, many people did talk about what was going on, though), I got a break from news during English only to watch ABC News during Debate (last hour). My teacher was new and didn't know how to get to the news, so we watched ABC News with very poor reception. I think that that is one day that will always stick out in my mind and I think it will be a LONG LONG time before I forget ANY of the details of that fateful day on September, 11.

Then, of course, there were the Columbine shootings. It hit us so close to home here in Rockford, Michigan because Columbine was a school so similar to Rockford in so many ways. We had about the same amount of students at our High School, we had similar (what you may call) "lifestyles". They are eerilly similar to us, and it really was just very... odd for us while also very sad.

Bootsy, it's so weird you mentioning Polly Klass. Petaluma(where she was from) is SO close to home. Being young, I still believed a genie would magically grant me three wishes( Aladdin had just come out...), and my first one was to have her back with her family. I remember bawling during the memorial service on tv.

1989 Earthquake. It was during the Battle of the Bay World Series. It was so crazy. I remember my grandmother freaking out about my mom driving home from work, because The Cypress Structure had collapsed( killing the most people) and my mom always had to drive home on that freeway. Thankfully, she was long past there by then.

Oakland Hills Fire. A lot of my mother's friends homes were lost, a lot of their pets didn't make it.

Columbine. No brainer.

Oklahoma City Bombing.

September 11th, 2001.

Up until September 11th, I would have had to say the Challenger expolsion was the most memorable. Being in 3rd grade and it having a teacher on board it was pretty hyped in school. I'm just glad we didn't actually watch it because we were at lunch.
However, I must now say September 11, 2001 is the most memorable/shocking. Ang hopefully we will never live through anything like that again.

Hey theshark 8777, where were you living at the time. I was in 2nd grade in Florida and was actually outside watching the Challenger when it exploded. That is one image I will NEVER forget.

WHen I originally posted my top 11 eleven most shocking events list, I always thought that the Challenger explosion would be the defining/most shocking event of my lifetime. Sadly, I now have to revise this list and say that that the attack and collapse of the World Trade Center is now the most shocking event of my lifetime. I will, as well as everyone else, always know where I was and what I was doing when I heard that it happened.
I was getting ready to go to work when I turned on the "Today" show to catch the first few minutes of the news when I saw WTC #1 in flames. I had no clue what had caused it, but I knew that this was going to be the big story of the day. But then again I had no clue that it would be the big story of this year, which it will be, unless if G-d forbid something worse happens.
Maybe it's early to say this, but with a war on terrorism in Afghanstan swiftly approaching, I think what happened at the WTC could be the defining event of this decade.
