Question MaryAnn Out of Character?

In "Voodoo," (Season 3) everyone works hard to "de-zombie" the Professor. They all
return their great artifacts to the cave and Ginger even performs a special (although incorrect) dance. The poor Professor is unfortunately left in the rain overnight--
still a zombie. Then it is discovered that MaryAnn has kept back a piece of jewelry (a pin)
and not returned it as she should have. She knowingly took a chance doing this, it was not an oversight, despite everyone's efforts and the Professor's predicament. Even after it
is pointed out to her in front of the still "zombified" Professor, she is reluctant to part with it and Gilligan seems to sympathize with her. MaryAnn is generally helpful toward the
common cause and this is not a survival "desperation" situation (as in "Water, Water," e.g.). She is not overly materialistic with things like jewelry--seldom even wears it--and willingly gave up all her things in "Mine Hero." Do you understand this selfishness on her
part in "Voodoo"?

I think she just forgot to turn it in.

Post MaryAnn out of Character/

To clarify--this was not an oversight on MaryAnn's part--she claimed that
she did not think one little pin would hurt, so she was aware that she was
retaining it and she did not have an "Oops!" kind of reaction when the Skipper
pointed it out to her. Thanks.

Even as late as the 60's it was a common stereotype to portray women as naturally (even involuntarily) weak and a bit selfish when it came to things like jewelry, fur coats, beautiful dresses, etc. I think the tone essentially conveyed the times---that Mary Ann "was a woman, after all" and so couldn't be blamed....

....you see the same kind of thing when Jane Jetson is a lousy driver or a naturally nurturing mother character becomes vicious when shopping at a 50% off sale.

I'm not calling it sexist in a negative way---it was funny and women laughed at it too. I'm just saying that no one would have pegged it as "out of character" in 1966.

I noticed that too. The Skipper seemed to be just as surprised and disappointed in Mary Ann!

(I'm sorry for not posting here lately, I've switched my OS to Freespire Linux so I've been busy with that.)

I noticed that the Proffesor blinks several times while under the voodoo spell.

Do zombies normally blink?
