Default TV SHOW / VIDEO Video Ratings

Quality viewing grading on 1-10 scale ...

6 = for HARDCORE fans only ( High GEN transfers / source material glitches etc)

7 = good viewing for FANS of show only ( casual fans won’t enjoy ) ( High GEN transfers/minor glitches/ age of source material )

8 = very good/excellent viewing for ALL (1st/ 2nd GEN transfers /age of source material / minor glitches if any)

9-10 = excellent viewing for ALL (Retail and/or 1st gen transfers )( minor to /NO glitches)

This is what I stick with generally....for those that always ask the same questions in pm's, etc..when the ratings are listed next to titles...

Just wondering....what are 1 through 5?

Here's a suggestion:

5 - blank screen
4 - blank screen with annoying static
3 - blank screen with annoying static and occassional visions of satan
2 - black hole
1 - Fear Factor
(...or insert your own idea of the most egregiously awful show ever here)

Fear Factor is a good choice. Although a 1 is a little high IMO.

Actually I've never seen this particular set that was floating around a year or two ago....but Lamont stated that the PERFECT STRANGERS set that was floating around, was like trash? a 4.0/10 ???????????????

I do have the OLD version of Charles in Charge DVD set that was like 4.5/10 but I thankfully did a HUGE upgrade to that set... what cracks me up, si I did a trade or ebay last year, for something...I literally popped it in when I got it, and was like, "This SUCKS!"... tracking, jumping screens, etc.. and they rated it a 8/10? I think it was Ebay or something, but at that point I was all... NO WAY! piece of crap, and tossed it...and gave them bad feedback!

I think a 4.5 means there is only a faint picture and garbly audio that is so bad that you have to act the scene out in your head using your imagination.

This is a great question. I’ve always thought that those who use a number grading system should define exactly what they mean on their lists. Else, we are at the mercy of opinion/assumption.

Consider this, from the lists of two of the most respected traders here:

One has a set I made, recorded direct off-cable to DVD SP and entirely authored in the computer and it is graded an “8”.

Another has a DVD SP to DVD LP ANALOG DUB of a set I made originally from 2nd-3rd gen VHS tapes and it is graded an “8”.

That's a pretty significant difference as to what constitutes an “8”, but without an up-front definition of what the numbers mean, how is anyone to know?

On a 1-10 scale, I expect an 8 to look pretty darn good, basically, 80% as good as a retail dvd. I’d call a retail dvd a “10”. A recording direct off of digital cable/satellite would be a “9”, a recording direct off analog cable an “8”. A copy of an off-tv recording would be a 7, etc.

What is the point in using a 1-10 scale if “6” means “high gen. for hardcore fans only”? Isn’t that what the “1” is for?

I agree with your ratings. That's about how I would grade. I've never seen anyone grade something less than a 6.

"5-6" or below, was basiclly trash, and no one would offer it on their list to begin with...to me anyway... I don't have anything under a 7.0, meaning, if it's got serious, or many tracking issues that can't be fixed, or you're basically viewing the issues of the recording as opposed to the actual content of the show/recording, then toss it......I toss it...if I can view it for my personal pleasure and enjoyment and still like it, and I like it, and it's my copy not to trade, I keep it... I would never offer it for trade, unless, there was another "Die-hard" fan that had to "see" or own it, etc..." then I'd give it to them, since you couldn;t trade it...LOL there's awlays that fan/collector that "has" to get everything regardless of quality...

Say I recorded Happy Days back in 1981 on an old VHS recorder..SP mode, 9.0 quality copy right there, not retail obviously...at the time, clear, signal, straight tv broadacast.. a copy of that would be 8.5, another 8.0, then that copy to another would be a 7.5, etc.. meaning each copy of a copy, degrades etc...to me, would go down 1/2 step in grade....provided it's in SP mode... if someone copied it in LP or SLP, then you're "F'ed! this was just a range I use.. in essence for me any way...

Straight from TV, either digital or non, 9.0 quality... make me a copy on VHS, 8.5, and so on, 8.0, and so on, 7.5, etc... DVD copies, are another thing... this is just me, others grade differntly...it's better than A, B+ or C- HAHAHAh Can you imagine an "F"???? LOL
Like Some folks put ALICE as a 7.0 others 7.5...that's fine, it's in the 7's, period.... People know what that means..no? for me, that's fine, and it's quite good, considering, the rarity, it's all that is available, and beggars can't be choosers...if someone gives it a 7.0, fine. When Retial comes out, I may upgrade, but who knows... you take what's out there, or what's available to your own liking? Now if Alice was a 6.5, forget it...

I got the 4.5 from lamont one day.. I started to laugh... he could have said 2.5 or 4.0, but I think in essence, he was being very sarcastic, that it SUCKS! Big time! and exagerrating, that you pop it in, and tracking issues and jumpy screens, and low to faint audio, or bzzzz-ing sounds etc.. as you adjust the tracking you hear buzzzing sounds... I would not know the differnce from a 4.5 from a 2.0.. like Konfusion said, 7.0 or less, is a personal choice...some stay away, others, take what they can...

the descriptions are good, but what would really help me and i think others if someone could/would make examples clips of each grade. Maybe 10-15 seconds clips and available online somewhere so people can download and/or view them.

Maybe this is already out there somewhere? If not if someone wouldnt mind makeing the clips I would be more than willing that helping out with sticking them out on the web for all to share and comment on.

exapmle..I Love the heavy metal band Van Halen.. the David Lee Roth Era... back in 1977 and 1978, you'd be very very lucky to get a video recording of any live show of their performing... by today's standards, if an audience member recorded the show and made their rounds, at best that quality would be in the 6's.... not 7's or 8's... not gonna happen, it's a bootleg recording at best..BUT to see Eddie Van Halen play live when he was RAW, smoking and blistering all over the concert set.... "Die-Hard" fans will easily take a 5.0-7.0 quality of that footage, with issues, if it was available or existed... to the lay person, they'll pass or not care...to the fans, they'll take what they can get...

that was why some folks, the "FANS" would have no problem, taking a 6.0 quality with audio and video issues, just to have it , seen it, and experienced it... I don't have it yet, I know it's out there, but they want a fortune for it..so I pass on it.. LOL

I recently got a set from a trader on this board that is so bad I've had to rate it at a 5 on my list. I knew it was a vhs transfer but he didn't say it was so bad.

I decided not to leave any feedback because he also threw in some extras that I was pretty pleased with. Still, I'd have prefered some honesty. I won't be dealing with him again.
