We all know what happened on September 11, 2001. But what did your local newspaper use its front page, above the fold, to report in its morning edition, before the terrorist attacks began?
My local paper, the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger, had a story on New Jersey governor Donald DiFrancesco insisting that white suburban opposition to a major-league hockey arena in Newark, New Jersey's largest city, was based on racism because of Newark's overwhelmingly black and Hispanic population. The Reverend Reginald Jackson, a leading New Jersey black minister, was pleased that a white Republican politician like DiFrancesco told it like it was. |

On the Philadelphia Daily News Front Page on 9/11/01 was the Philadelphia Eagles Donovan Mcnabb and some readers felt it wasn't right

I'm not too sure our paper didnt print a special edition on 9/11/01. Our paper is a morning paper, so Im sure it was something trivial. I dont remember what the special edition said or the 9/12 paper.

That's the point of my question. A lot of morning newapapers were focused on other stories having nothing to do with al-Qaeda or terrorism in general -on that day. George Will noted that the front pages of New York Times and the Washington Post that day were concerned with policy wonk issues that seemed irrelevant later on. Some of the headlines people noticed on 9/11/01 at 8:45 A.M. were trivial, provincial, and parochial at best downight silly and picayune at worst. Remember Gary Condit? On 9/12, we forgot him. |
