Arrow Just an update for all interested

Well I got back unscaved from upstate NY and the first thing to get me was the plane ride. There were all of NINE people on board including me, and there were 3 flight attendants and the 2 pilots, so it wasn't at all crowded. It was so deserted, I didn't feel at all comfortable. (Plus I ended up pushing back my day from Sunday to the following Saturday due to nerves and the like.)

The next thing to hit me was that unmistakeable smell I got when I got off the plane. Apparently it's EVERYWHERE now, but faint. If you don't know what it is, it smells like something strange burning then you get used to it after a while, but those of us here in the city know it all too well. Those closer to the building know it better than anyone.

Well, I'm trying to get on with my life again, but everything is different. The conversations are different, everyone asks what it was like and where was everyone and all that, and my roommate has lost all sympathy for me because her best friend had it rougher than I did. *shrugs* I say we all have it pretty bad. When you find you've lost friends or even acquaintances...or just people that used to fill the city...it hurts.

Thank you all who've been so nice in this, again I appreciate the kind words and well wishes. At least here and my website I can unwind and just talk about odds and ends.

Is that how you spell the dog? I've been trying to figure it out but it just never looks correct and I couldn't find my dictionary earlier when I was looking for it.

That's interesting about the planes. I guess nobody wants to fly. My dad says that 1/2 the airlines will be out of business by Christmas...I dunno. Continental is like giving away miles. I got a couple of mailing that give you like 3000 miles. My mother is nervous about flying this Thanksgiving. We are going Newark- Miami- St Croix, but my grandparents and cousins are going LAX- Miami- St Croix so she thinks they might chicken out (I wouldn't blame them)

I'm going to be flying to Florida in November. I figure by then, the traffic will have picked up at the airports. I hope so, because if not, I fear that some airlines are going to go under.

Another thing about the airlines, they've gotten extremely strict...here's something I forgot to mention---they suggest you get to the airport 2 hours before your flight because they have to go through EVERYONE'S luggage bit by bit.

If you pack neatly, it shouldn't be too hard. I got there half an hour before my flight and they looked at me like I was crazy, but I had two advantages---A) I'm on crutches and people feel sorry for me and B) It was 6 in the morning of a Saturday one week after a disaster while no one else wants to fly.

So I was lucky to make that flight.

The people at my 4-H club try to act like it never happened. They don't want to talk about it and that causes tension between us. But it's not like that's new. They always get on my nerves.

I'm in the process of reevaluating my life. Already I am amazed at how much I took life for granted before. But no more. I'm getting myself out of the house and just loving it. TV can no longer be my life, because that is no life. I'm happy to say I am now involved with my school's yearbook staff and I am spending a lot more time with my family. I am also proud to be an American! But I still have to make myself a life.

Moofomoo, I am sorry you are alienated from your roommate. It is not a good feeling, I imagine.
If you don't mind me asking, why do you have crutches?

It's not a good feeling, to be sure, but for right now, it's what I have to live with. When she is able to look past her selfishness and stops trivializing my feelings about the current situation and how I am able to deal with it, things will be better.

As to the crutches, LUCKY ME---I was waiting tables last December and there was a grease spill on the ground that the busboy was supposed to clean up, but he did a lousy job and I got to slip on it. I landed directly on my kneecap and did serious damage, because it is now NINE MONTHS LATER and I'm still on crutches and will have to go in for surgery so they can see what's wrong.

I've been able to get around fairly well with these things...they're like 2 new appendages that you get used to, and I can pass up many slow people on the streets of NYC.

There's another reason I'm glad I wasn't there at the WTC, I would have never made it out with my crutches. I can move only so fast, but running is out of the question.

moofomoo:

Glad you are safe and wasn't in the WTC.

I've never been on an airplane in my life, and after all that has happened I don't imagine I will be getting on one any time soon.

Eddie: Well listen-- I went out for basketball and I got my hair pulled, and my mother made ME quit.

Dudley: It's not that I was afraid of getting hurt or anything; it's just that-- well, it's kind o' hard to play the flute with a busted finger.

Glad to know I'm not the only one afraid to fly on a plane. I was never easy with it before, but now the mear mention of plane travel makes me have a panic attack. My dad thinks I'm crazy. We're supposed to go to Phoenix in October and I'm NOT looking forward to it. United Airlines no less.
