Default Bob Schieffer signs off for the final time - 08/31/2006

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTOOdtMdpWs

This is the man who should have had the anchor chair for 25 years, not Dan Rather.

Bob did a wonderful job anchoring the news the past year and a half. Still, when he took the job we ALL knew it was transitory, and not a permanent, long-term thing.

And since a couple of people brought it up, regarding Rather: People make errors ALL THE TIME. The difference is that in person, you make a mistake regarding someone, you apologise, and all is forgiven. In print journalism, you simply print a retraction and move on. Meanwhile, in broadcast journalism, you make one mistake and everyone comes down on you like an angry fist for the rest of your career and tries to tarnish all the great things you've accomplished. I have a significant amount of respect for Mr. Rather, and will continue to do so for a very long time to come. We all mistakes - he just made his against the wrong person, and now people are going to continue to rub it in his face for decades after he's gone, and that's a real shame.

But, this thread isn't about Dan Rather, it's about Bob Schieffer. A man I think did a wonderful job under less than wonderful circumstances.

Rather never cut anyone a break or an inch of slack in his entire career, unless they had a (D) next to their name. He made his bed, let him lie in it in shame for the rest of his life. He got off easy with just his legacy destroyed. Forging military docs is a crime, then there's the little matter of a phony story to impact a presidential election. He may not have forged the docs himself, but he ran with the story, against the advice of CBS. He's the poster boy for what Bush hate can drive a person to do.

But you're right, this thread is about Schieffer.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Monday!

Russ Mitchell? Or another anchor, like the rotating presidency of Argentina a few years back?
