Maybe it is my age catching up to me, but I have been hearing a lot about Blu-ray lately. I was watching a commercial for a new dvd release and it said available this Tuesday on DVD and Blu-ray. What the heck is this?

it is a digital-rights management [s]scam[/s] system that Sony is trying to push out to mass market, in the form of high-definition dvd's and players.
once you've got it, they will be able to control where, what and how often you will be able to play [s]their[/s] your dvd's - and forget about recording to back up or loaning them out to friends; it will just not be possible. |

TJL and theshark8777, it's the high-end super VHS aka S-VHS tape. Super because it would hold much more info per 1 inch of tape length compared to conventional VHS tapes. Plus, they were too expensive per tape, and you had to use an S-Video plug just to see the video clearly, otherwise it looked crappy with just an analog(yellow) video cable. S-VHS VCRs went extinct rather quicky because not much demand after a period of time.
