I know since the script of the pilot has been shown Gilligan was his surname but growing up with the show I always thought Gilligan was his first name. They always used Ginger and Mary Ann. You never heard anyone call "hey Grumby" or "hey Hinkley".

Until I found out otherwise, I also assumed "Gilligan" was his first name.

when Sherwood Schwartz got the name Gilligan he was in the phone book and it was someones last name, but Gilligan always introduces himself as Gilligan so I don't know why Sherwood Schwartz wants it to be his last name. "Willy" is his first name but why not use that at the end, it could be Gilligan Wilson or something like that.

I forgot where I read it, but Alan Hale always thought Gilligan's full name was Gilligan Davis

I never thought of it as anything other than his last name, only because I'd heard it used only as a last name with other people.

Growing up, I always thought Gilligan was his first name. In fact, I don't think I ever wondered what his last name was. If he was named Willy Gilligan, I guess he was shipwrecked with Howell, Grumby, Howell, Grant, Hinkley, and Summers-----which sounds kind of like a law firm...

There is a scene where Gilligan is used as his sur name.
In the episode, "How To Be A Hero," Mr. Howell introduces Gilligan to the headhunter by say something similar to the following: Mr. Howell: Mr. Headhunter meet Mr. Gilligan; Mr. Gilligan meet Mr. Headhunter. And there is a reason for Gilligan to introduce himself as Gilligan. I imagine since that's to how he's usually referred, he just figured why fight it, let 'em just call me Gilligan. |
