Exclamation Comair plane crashes on takeoff in Lexington, Kentucky; 49 dead

Plane with 50 aboard crashes in Kentucky
‘Significant number of fatalities,’ FAA says; flight was en route to Atlanta

BREAKING NEWS
NBC News and news services
Updated: 15 minutes ago

A plane flying from Lexington, Ky.'s Blue Grass Airport to Atlanta, Ga., crashed shortly after takeoff early Sunday morning. At least one person survived.

Comair Flight 5191, a CRJ-100 regional jet with 47 passengers and three crew members, crashed at 6:07 a.m. shortly after taking off for Atlanta, said Kathleen Bergen, a FAA spokeswoman.

There are a "significant number of fatalities," she said. There was no immediate word on what caused the crash. It crashed a mile west of the airport in a wooded area, according to Bergen.

“We have no indication at all that this has anything to do with terrorism,” said Laura Brown, another FAA spokeswoman.

I've been watching the coverage over on CNN. I feel bad for the families of the victims who perished and I hope authorities discover the cause of the accident quickly...

They took off on the wrong runway? What the hell? This is a terrible shame.

My brother flies constantly for business on planes like the one that crashed. My deepest sympathies go to the families of those lost this morning.

Yeah it is. Apparently the runway they took off from was half the length of the other(and not long enough for this plane to take off), and has no lights(it was dark at the time of the crash). Somebody messed up big time. Also, it has come out that most, if not all the people died from the resulting fire since the plane was loaded with fuel, NOT the crash itself. Horrible.

I heard that. The lucky ones (for lack of a better word) died from smoke inhalation. The others...I shudder to think about it. The poor souls.

There was a newleywed couple on board who had just gotten married the night before and were on their way to their honeymoon.

FAA: Tower staffing during plane crash violated rules
POSTED: 10:38 p.m. EDT, August 29, 2006

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday acknowledged that only one controller was in the tower, in violation of FAA policy, when a Comair jet crashed Sunday while trying to take off from the wrong runway in Lexington, Kentucky.
