Elton John vows to make hip hop record

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - After 40 years of performing rock music, pop ballads and movie soundtracks, Elton John is looking to cross over to yet another musical genre -- hip hop.

"I want to bring my songs and melodies to hip hop beats -- a bit like 'No Diggity' by Blackstreet,'" John said in excerpts of an interview posted on Rolling Stone's Web site on Friday.

John told the music magazine he would like to work with producer Dr. Dre and a variety of artists, although he had yet to contact them.

"I want to work with Pharrell (Williams), Timbaland, Snoop (Dogg), Kanye (West), Eminem and just see what happens. It may be a disaster, it could be fantastic, but you don't know until you try," he said.



John is one of rock-n-roll's most prolific singer/songwriters and is known for flamboyant costumes and spectacular piano playing. His hits include "Your Song," "Rocket Man" and "Candle in the Wind."

The 59-year-old musician's next album, "The Captain and the Kid" is expected to be released in the fall.

He soared to stardom in the 1970s and has maintained a legendary status, branching into writing songs for movies like "The Lion King" and Broadway plays like "Aida."

But, hip hop?

Actually, John performed the song "Stan" with Eminem on 2001's telecast of the Grammys, the music industry's top awards, and the pair brought the house down.

Apparently he didn't learn anything from the disco album he made in the late '70s...



Remember this one?? If you don't, you're much better off. Elton was pretty much producer Georgio Moroder's (Donna Summer, etc) puppet on this one and it tanked pretty quickly.

I never thought I'd say this, but if I had to choose between hip hop Elton and the sludgy '90s ballad Elton...I'll take ballad Elton.

I never thought I'd say this, but if I had to choose between hip hop Elton and the sludgy '90s ballad Elton...I'll take ballad Elton.

It was his thirteenth studio album. Bad luck!

This record also featured a disco cover of "Johnny B. Goode."

Highest chart position in Britain - #41

What a way for the seventies' most dominant rock and roller to end that decade. Even Elvis ended the fifties with more dignity.

So will Elton call himself L-2000 Pounds (Elton) or MC Reg (as in his birth name, Reginald Dwight) ?

During the 1970's and 1980's Elton made some great music but in my opinion he hasn't had a good album since The One back in 1992. His last album, Peachtree Road, was terrible. And Elton making a hip hop record? I hate to see someone who was once so good career continue on the creative downward slide that it has been on since that goofy Lion King soundtrack in 1994.

On a more positive note, I still enjoy listening to many of Elton's older albums like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy and Too Low For Zero.

Elton is releasing a new album this fall entitled The Captain And The Kid. It's a sequel to one of his classic albums from the seventies. Care to guess which one...??

I believe his first farewell tour was about 30 years ago...no joke.
