Default Poll question/Discussion Thread. You would u have preferred to see more of?

Lionel or Mother Jefferson in season 1? I'm asking this because Mike evans left because Zara Cully was used a lot more while he was used a lot less which led to him leaving the show. Of course I would have preferred to see more of Lionel in season 1

I much preferred Zara Cully (Mother Jefferson). She was the only one on the show who could get Louise to break character. Louise was the sweetest lady ever and could hold her own with anyone- except Mother Jefferson.

Mother Jefferson brought out the best and worst in Louise.

Mother J.

Lionel number one had too much of an "attitude" that I could do without.

I would have to go with Mother Jefferson, she might've been old but she was funny.

Well you asked. Obviously, you are the only Mother Jefferson basher on here.(how many times you're going to bring up about hating her?) I voted for her because she brought comic relief to the show. Lionel didn't bring anything to the show. He was funny on All In the Family.

You have got to face it Solomon, Lionel was more of a straight man on the Jeffersons.

I think Lionel's funniest scenes was on AITF when he was baiting Archie.

Right, and he would have been a great straight man to George's personality but none of the writers never thought of it.

BTW: I just want to say this is the most shocking result of a TV Debate I have ever seen on SitcomsOnline. Unbelievable

I'm with you on this one Solomon. I couldn't stand George's mother.

I stated this five years ago. It was my third post here, lol. My screen name then was Wan66 (don't ask).

It's post #9. I was such a beee-tch back then. lol.

I like both characters very well. However, I had to go with Mother Jefferson on this one. She did indeed bring out the best and worse in Louise. I also loved it when she had interactions with Mr. Bentley. It is remarkable how great Zara Cully's performances were being in her mid-80s. Several women at that age have a lot of trouble even walking around and remembering everyone's name. Zara was memorizing a ton of lines and delivering them with excellent comedic timing. Had it not been for her cancer, I am confident that Zara would have lived to be in her 90s and performed on the show throughout maybe its entire run. But it just was not meant to be.

Zara needed the screen time early on anyways. No one knew how much longer she was going to be around. She was obviously more popular than Lionel according to most fans. She had passed away by Season 4 so there was plenty of time left for Mike Evans to come back and play Lionel, but he did not come back until Season 6 and then left again soon after that. Why not stay, Mike? The old bird wasn't around anymore.

Also, this show was not really a family show with a mom, a dad, and kids like The Cosby Show or Family Matters. Those shows would have been weird if they never showed the kids (although we all know how weird it got when Judy was kidnapped by aliens and wiped her family's memories of her ever existing clean) but the Jeffersons was not affected by the absence of the main characters' kid. It had a couple with some weird neighbors and one child who was in college. I do not think that this show realy needed to show the couple's kid. Not to say that I disliked Lionel. I liked him a lot but I think that the show could have and did feature many more humorous situations with other characters.

I don't think the show needed the Star's mother either. Especially when she was only seen once on All in the Family
