Default Recast M*A*S*H with new actors

Hola!

If a studio was going to do M*A*S*H again with new actors, which actors would you like to see in the main roles? draft an actor for the following roles)

Colonel Henry Blake
Colonel Sherman Potter
Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce
Cpt. Trapper John Mcintyre
Cpt. B.J. Honeycutt
Major Frank Burns
Major Hotlips "Margaret" Houlihan
Major Winchester
Klinger
Radar
Father Mulchachy

I bring up this topic because I think Greg Kinnear would have Major Burns down. He does that kind of role well. That is dead on. Kinnear does weird, creepy, antagonist well. Tom Cruise could do it well too. maybe Steve Carrell (40 year old virgin)

Other, I don't know. I can take some wild stabs at it though..............

Maybe Ben Affleck as Hawkeye (hear the boos on IIDB now). Leonardo DiCaprio perhaps? Steve Carrell?

Owen Wilson as McIntyre. Kelsey Grammar as Winchester (except he is too old, David Ogden Stiers was about 5-6 years younger than the other doctors) Klinger is a one of a kind, who would replace him? Is there any Arabic/Lebanese actors that could play him? Meg Ryan would do a competant Houlihan, (but like Grammar, a little long in the tooth)

Potter or Blake? Only one could be the Colonel in my new movie/series. Eugene Levy could do Blake well, a Jewish Henry. Levy can play surfacely incompetant characters who are not as stupid as they look. Potter, really do not know.

Potter played by Patrick Stewart in a southern Missouri accent? If Hugh Laurie can fool us Yanks, why can't Picard (uh, Stewart)? I think Stewart in a war film of this strength and mood would be kick ass to see.

Houlihan played by Christina Ricci?(Too young, but can be bitchy and annoying enough to do it, see the Woody Allen film "Anything Else") Ricci as a character actress does demanding people very well.

Matthew Perry as B.J?

Klinger Steve Carrell (again)?

Radar, no clue.

Who would you choose to play the roles above? If you were a M*A*S*H fan, did you ever wonder what it would be like for Blake to command Winchester, or if McIntyre working with Winchester? I know this would never happen, it would be like putting four strange English lads together and call them the Beatles. It would be impossible. But in fantasy, which people would get which roles? All the characters in one production. I have always thought the TV version with four doctors is BS anyway, there should of been about 8 doctors on site. vote for your favorite!

Wow! Great Question! This one is fun...so I'm just going to pick people that I think would be interesting in the characters, relatively disregarding the actors/actress who played the character on the series, so the ages, etc., wouldn't work but I think it could still be interesting to see...

Colonel Henry Blake--John Lithgow
Colonel Sherman Potter--Ed O'Neil
Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce--John Cusack
Cpt. Trapper John Mcintyre--Michael J Fox
Cpt. B.J. Honeycutt--Thomas Gibson
Major Frank Burns--Kevin Spacey
Major Hotlips "Margaret" Houlihan--Allison Janney
Major Winchester--Hugh Laurie
Klinger--George Lopez
Radar--Fred Savage
Father Mulchachy--Tony Shalhoub
Sophie--Mr. Ed (ok...just kidding on that one!)

Colonel Henry Blake--Ted Danson
Colonel Sherman Potter--Tim Conway
Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce---Jim Carrey or David Schwimmer
Cpt. Trapper John Mcintyre--Will Ferrell
Cpt. B.J. Honeycutt--George Clooney
Major Frank Burns--David Hyde Pierce or Robin Williams
Major Hotlips "Margaret" Houlihan---Kyra Sedgwick
Major Winchester--Alan Rickman
Klinger--David Schwimmer or Jim Carrey
Radar--Daniel Radcliffe
Father Mulchahy--Matthew Perry

Its a stretch on some, I had a tough time with Mulchahy but for the most part I like my cast

Hannibal, Missouri, Col. Potter's hometown, is in NORTHERN Missouri. It's approx. 100 miles northwest of St. Louis.

Patrick Stewart as Col. Potter??? ARE YOU SERIOUS???? That'd be like having...I don't know...Ted Danson as Frasier Crane.

I think Kelsey Grammer would be good as Charles, though. (but he doesn't want to do comedy anymore)

And maybe Steve Martin as Hawkeye.

I think Steve Martin would probably be good a Hawkeye, Kelsey Grammar would be good as Charles, Goldie Hawn would make a good Hot Lips and Patrick Stewart would be goo as Co. Potter.

All great actors, but probably way too old now?

In fact, Goldie Hawn might actually be older than Loretta Swit?

I see what might happen is more like what was done with Star Trek and Dark Shadows, recast and rebooted with younger actors and actresses.

Possibly, the pattern that both M*A*S*H movie and television show did, which was cast relatively unknown talent in the roles might be one way to handle it..?

Now, Alan Alda, Wayne Rogers (or Don Sutherland & Elliot Gould if you prefer) are still alive, as are both Loretta Swit and Sally Kellerman, Jamie Farr is still alive and as of last week was performing onstage before he took ill... several of the other crucial cast from both versions, film and television are still alive, in fact.

Larry Linville, Harry Morgan and McLean Stevenson are sadly, passed, but as far as I know Robert Duvall as the original Frank Burns is still living.

Perhaps there could be a "Grumpy Old Men" take on the M*A*S*H characters?!?

Too old is right and what would be the point?

They'd need to get actors who at the oldest were in their thirties to do this right.

But fortunately they did the show right the first time and I hope that M*A*S*H never, ever gets remade.

Actually, in my opinion, they got M*A*S*H right twice, since the movie is generally known to be one of Robert Altman's masterpieces.

And re-watching the first season of the television M*A*S*H again after many years I agree, they got it right there as well.

And seriously, you are right... and what could they possibly do that could improve what came before/

It's funny -- my experience with M*A*S*H is totally ass-backwards: I watched the show first, saw the movie second and read the novel last.

While I do like the movie, to me, it's like an alternative version of M*A*S*H, because it's all about the show for me.

But I imagine some who saw the movie first may not have liked the show or it might've taken some getting used to see Alan Alda and the other actors taking over the characters from Altman's movie.
