I was watching this episode today on DVD and in the opening scene, you can really see the cutout in the rug. I wonder what those were for? Just marked off areas? Also in this episode, the cast comes very close to the front of the stage and it looks as if they are going to come right through your TV set!

I rewatched that episode and noticed "seams" in the carpet. Is that what you mean? You can really see them when Rob is on the floor after Jerry attacks him in "Punch Thy Neighbor". I think they used managable pieces of carpet, butted together, to do the Petries' wall-to-wall carpeting.

OK...I thought that maybe the set was in pieces for some reason that they moved around.

...the Petrie living room had to be "in pieces" so it could be easily assembled and "broken down" for filming every week....no one was supposed to notice how "seamy" the carpet was....a combination of budget and the attitude that no one watching in THEIR home was supposed to notice, anyway...
