The Kinks - underrated band - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Anybody out there listen to The Kinks?

As a kid I used to listen to their late 70s (Misfits, Low Budget) to early 80s (Give the People What they Want) stuff.

I never really listened to their earlier music, except for the live versions on One For the Road, which were played almost in a frantic 70s Kinks style. Other than that, I heard the popular early 60s singles played on the radio. (some of which, like everything at that time, seemed a little stiff and formulatic)

Now I am listening to their releases after that pop singles explosion and find that there is a wealth of great tunes and albums from the mid-late 60s right to the mid 70s that deserve to be rediscovered. They truly are "albums" from concept ones to melodically and thematically linked ones. To me it's like discovering a great new band. Musically and lyrically Ray Davies is a genius.

Anyone out there into the Kinks or have a favorite album?

The Kinks rule. "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" is one of my all-time favorite songs.

Oh, The Kinks are one of the all-time greats!! Their '60's stuff is great, too!! One of my favorite songs is "Come Dancing" from 1983.

The Kinks was the first band I ever saw in concert - at the Capital Theater in Passaic NJ (it no longer exists) in 1986, when I was in high school. A friend of mine was a big fan, and I became a fan too.
I have one or two of thier albums somewhere, including "One For the Road," a great live album.

I'm only familiar with their 1960's music. I thought they were great!

"You Really Got Me" with that power chord guitar break in the middle of the song. Great stuff!
