A friend of mine just got a computer from someone else. It's an older computer but it should do what she wants. The computer was working fine, then they defragged it and now on the start up screen an error message pops up. It says:
ERROR Resource Conflict - PCI in slot 04 Bus:00, Device:0C, Function:01 ERROR Resource Conflict - PCI in slot 04 Bus:00, Device:0C, Function:02 Press <F1> to Setup, <F2> to Resume If I press F2 the computer will go to the main desktop screen and then just sit there for hours. We left it there all day one day and it did nothing. You couldn't open anything and you couldn't go anywhere. Any idea what is going on or how to solve it? If it's something inside that needs to be moved, I can do that NO problem, I just don't know what the error means. Any help would be appreciated. D |

all they did was defrag?
it seems that they have a resource conflict with a PCI device - whatever expansion card is installed in slot 4 is trying to use the same resources as some other device, or the device itself is malfunctioning. my best guess is that either they reset the BIOS (or the battery on the motherboard went dead and it reset itself) which removed whatever custom settings they had for that PCI card. to resolve the conflict, you are going to need to find out what the card is and try to change the resource settings it is using. boot into safemode and open the device manager, check to see what errors are in there and try to disable the device - or, you could open the case and remove whatever card it is (hopefully it is just a modem or something non-essential, if it is a videocard, you are going to have to do something else) does this computer have a PCI expansion card that replaces functions onboard the motherboard? if it does, like a video or sound card, the card onboard the motherboard will have to be disabled in the BIOS (where it says press F1 for setup, that is the BIOS settings) or the two will conflict. check this: http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/comp/mbs...onflict-c.html |

It was the weirdest thing. About 2 months ago they added memory to this computer (it's an old one) and finally decided to get a new computer and gave this old one to my friend. It was working fine, they ran defrag and then the error popped up. It had never done that before.
I let the message set on the screen about 20 minutes while I was doing other things then finally hit resume. It loaded windows as usual no problems. I went through deleting programs my friend would not need, cleaning it all up then reboot the computer and the error message was gone. I have no idea what the problem was but its fixed.....at least for now. Thanks Rob, if the error comes up again I'll try what you said. D |
