What Should I Do? (Education Question) - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

For those who have a master's degree, have considered getting a master's degree or are currently working toward one I am looking for advice. Anyone else please also feel free to comment.

I have a Bachelor's degree, but it's proving to not be enough. On one hand I don't really want to go back to school because I spent twenty-three years in school (age 3-26). I don't really want to spend another 2-4 years or however long it takes to get a master's degree in school. On the other hand I'm noticing that even with a Bachelor's Of Science that it's very hard to get a job. I don't have the work experience that so many jobs require. It's hard to get experience when every job seems to want prior experience. In some cases years of experience. Because of my vision impairment I've never been able to work. Other than babysitting. I think though that I would be able to work. I want to work. I want to make a difference. I'm worried that the coursework will be too difficult at the graduate (master's) level. My degree is in Child Development. I have a minor in psychology. My mother thinks that I should go for a master's in business. I don't know anything about that field. The other problem I am facing is my college GPA. When I graduated from college my final GPA was a 2.56. I'm not thrilled with that, but I guess that's better than nothing. Some places require minimum GPA's of 3.0. I had a very high GPA in high school (3.795), but only an average GPA in college. I wanted to pursue getting my alternative certification to teach. Where I live there is a shortage of teachers. There is a program for inidividuals that have a bachelor's degree to earn a teaching certificate. The program required at least a 3.0. So I didn't qualify because of that. All the other requirements I met. I've always wanted to teach elementary and I regret not getting a teaching certificate bachelor's degree.

Would I be making a mistake by trying to get my master's in business when business doesn't interest me? I'm also not great when it comes to math. There is probably a lot of courses, math wise, I would have to take. I'm not certain of that though.

I'm not sure what to do. I know the longer I go without being able to get a job and work the worse it's going to look for any prospective job I get. I graduated in December 2004. There have been hurdles, so to speak, one after another that have prevented me from being able to devote all my time to finding a job. I've also found it very discouraging that no one seems to want to hire me. I've even applied for jobs that only required a high school diploma, but due to lack of work experience I didn't qualify.

Well I feel your pain, I just started working towards my Master's also. Tonight was my first night. I thought about the work load as well as how difficult it might be.

All I can say is that you could try it and if it's not for you then you'll know. Do what you think will make you happy.

If I were you, I wouldn't get a masters in Business if you have zero interest in that. You don't sound like you want to be the "chained to a desk" kind of person. Have you looked at job openings at local elementaries? In the district I work in now, there's a shortage of special ed associates, and with your degree, you wouldn't have a problem. It's a good way to get a foot in the door, some experience, and you could even go to school to get a teaching certificate at the same time. The first grade teacher I work with started as an associate and got hired at the same school.

Business just doesn't sound fun at all.

Perhaps you can talk with someone in admittance about this program. Since there's a shortage of teachers, perhaps they can work something out...have you take extra courses or something. I think since you really want to teach, that's the direction you should go.

Business, forget it. I worked in corporate for years, and it was nothing but a grind.

that makes me wanan go down and change my major. I am in marketing and HATE it.

It's all personal preference I guess. I worked in PR and Marketing. The stress was insane. Marketing is one of the most fast-paced professions going.

Whatever you may do, do not go for a Master's just to get a Master's in something like business IF THAT DOES NOT INTEREST YOU. The worst thing you can do for yourself is to get into something (job wise, career wise) that you have zero interest in. Why set yourself up for an eventual letdown?
