For some reason, my DVD-ROM player, which usually works just fine, does not recognize any kind of DVD anymore. What can I do to make it play them again?

What program do you use to play them? I got a new version of Windows recently and it won't play DVD's because of copy protection. I play them through VLC Media player and they work fine though. Does yours just not play Retail ones or does it not play ones you burned yourself either?

I tried it on PCDVD, InterVideo WinDVD 4 and InterActual. They all couldn't read the discs.

have you changed or installed anything recently?
does the drive still play cd's (data and music cd's) ok? if you are using XP, have you tried to do a System Restore? (if it doesn't fix the problem, just undo it) if you open the Device Manager (double-click on the System icon in Control Panel, choosing the Hardware tab, and click on Device Manager or type devmgmt.msc into the Run command), does it show any red X's or ?'s if you click on the dvd rom drive in there, what does it say for the device status? you could try rebooting into Safe Mode and uninstalling the driver for it, along with any "ghost" drivers - unknown drivers that appear only in Safe Mode - then reboot back into normal mode and let Windows reload the drivers if that fails to fix it, go to the manufacturer's site and see if they have updated drivers or firmware - try that, if it fails you will probably need to replace the drive. |
