Question about trading..

Question to the forum.




What is your motivation for trading?

Is it to save money becuase retail sets are expensive

Is it becuase retail sets don't often complete a series and or take too long?

Is it because you like to do it yourself- and add special touches and or enjoy the artistic nature?

I was caught in a loop of thinking tonight.

I realize I make sets more and more, and trade for full series more and more, becuase the wait for retail is ridiculous.
I find myself waiting, wondering when is the next season coming- and I get annoyed and impatient.

So I wonder, since I don't buy that many sets-
and I don't do the waiting, when they do their research, they see one less sale.
ME.
I wonder how many others contribute to that- and when the sale is down they dont' make more.
Becuase they don't make more- I trade for the next show or season

SO how much do I impede my own results and opportunities, by trading

Ditto. My interest is the older crime/mystery & westerns. of which very few have been produced commercially. My only recourse is home made sets so I have very, very few retail sets.

Of course if a set is to your liking, it is much easier to tade for a complete, home made brew then waiting for a retail set to come out in piece meal.

Trading is much more fun, you get to meet people and of course there is much more interaction then the impersonal appproach of going to the store, handing your money to a clerk and leaving.

I still get a kick out of going to the mailbox, receiving some disks and going to the computer and looking at the goodies. I never get tires of looking at the Traci Lord's disks that Lamont sends every week.

the only stuff that i'd trade for is stuff that most likely won't ever be released commercially - i buy a LOT of retail dvd's, and i'd probably buy even more if they'd just get to more of the good stuff that i want...

I don't think I have ever traded for something on DVD, I would rather just pay the little bit more to have the best it can be. I just don't think it is worth it when there is a better version out there. I don't mind waiting either. I trade for a lot of guest appearances by the GI cast, I don't really want the entire series of it or just a season, I really just want the one episode so I do a lot of trades for that. I have been doing a lot of complete series recently though, a lot of that has to do with ease because I know the majority of traders want that so I am trying to build that part up of my collection. All the series I have complete though as of right now aren't on DVD.

I buy a lot of retail, and I believe in that - if no one buys, they won't produce more. I've always thought of it as "supporting my shows," but now I'm reaching the point where I need to make some value judgments about what I'll buy because so many of my current shows are being released on DVD. And I'm having to think about what I'll keep of the stuff I've purchased, since I haven't even broken the cellophane on 90% of the sets I've purchased.

I won't trade or buy rips, period.

I trade for stuff I can't find on retail, or if it's been released, it's been cut, and the homemade set is more complete.

I trade so I can get those wonderful short-lived or forgotten series that will probably never be released.

I also buy a lot of retail sets. Even if I already have something from a TV rip, I will sometimes buy it when it comes out in a retail set. (if I really like the show!)

i have a vastly different spin on that idea

if no one buys

maybe they will sell the season sets at a fair price

my all time favorite shows were the star trek ones

mostly 6-7 discs per season, and right at a $100 a season

so $14 and up per disc


and how about the time-life or columbia house ones at $19.99 plus the $7 ship and handleing, when they use 90 cent media mail for a ship method

and now even the estates of certain tv are into it

like the cimarron series with the whitmark estate getting $20 plus ship for each episode, and these dont even have menus to tell whats on the disc,

the studios are getting stupid profits,and retail buyers are letting them

as far as im concerned they can keept he tapes in the vault forever

they have proven that if it doesnt sell big, they will drop the series in mid-release

To be fair to Traci, she has turned legit, but nothing she's done will ever be nominated for an Oscar.

This is the case for me sometimes, like in the case of Boy Meets World, where Disney seems to have stopped after Season 3 and aren't planning on releasing the last 4 seasons, at least not for now.

Usually with me though, it's becaue a series hasn't been released on DVD and probably won't ever be released on DVD so I get the episodes from someone online (at sites like this fine one here). If it's available commercially, I buy it in the store or online, unless there is content missing or stuff cut, like others have said, then I'll look for off air copies.

My motivation is a strong desire not to waste my valuable time channel surfing all night long desperatly looking for something to watch. That's why I started taping my favorite old TV shows almost 20 years ago, so I'd have something to watch that was decent and that I liked. Today there isn't one new TV show that I waste my time on. All my prime time viewing is old shows from the '60's and early '70's. As for buy or trade, I do both, I trade when it's a show I can't buy. And I buy a series when it's one of my favorite shows whether I have it already recorded or not, the quality from a retail set is always better than a trade set of shows. My shelves are loaded with retail sets of old TV series that I also have "home-made" copies of. My problem is running out of space to hold it all. That's the real problem. But as to having to say, "There's nothing on TV", I never have that problem, not since I started making recordings way back when.
