On August 16, 2006, federal drug agents and the Coast Guard made a major announcement, stating that they have "taken the head off the snake" of Mexico's largest family-run drug cartel which essentially controlled the entire Mexico-U.S. border drug trade. Authorities say that the "head of the snake" is Francisco Javier Arellano-Felix who they captured off the coast of Mexico's Baja California. Francisco Javier was the most recent family member to lead the notorious Arellano-Felix family's gang.
The DEA confirmed that on Monday, August 14th, they received information that Arellano-Felix might have been on board a 43-foot recreational boat named 'Doc Holiday.' US Coast Guard officials were scheduled to intercept the boat 15 nautical miles off the coast from La Paz, Mexico. On the boat, agents found eight adults and three children. Although he initially tried to throw agents off his trail by using an alias, Francisco Javier Arellano-Felix was soon identified. Everyone on the boat was arrested and transported to San Diego. Authorities say that Arellano-Felix's arraignment is scheduled to take place soon. Cops say that with Francisco Javier's capture, the Arellano-Felix gang is extremely vulnerable. Police say their latest intelligence confirs that Francisco Javier's brother, Eduardo, is still "running about" in Mexico. Furthermore, they offered the evaluation that Eduardo would not make an effective leader of the cartel now that Francisco Javier has been taken down. Officials believe the lack of effective leadership may give US and Mexican authorities the perfect opportunity to completely dismantle the group. Francisco Javier Arellano-Felix is wanted both in the United States and Mexico for his role as a leader in the violent and sophisticated family-led cartel. The State Department had been offering $5 million in rewards for the capture of Javier or his brother, Eduardo. America's Most Wanted last profiled the Arellano-Felix gang in January 2006 when federal agents attributed sophisticated drug tunnels to the cartel. |
