Cool Oh To Be A Kid Again

Oh, to Be a Kid Again

Decisions were made by saying "eeny-meeny-miney-mo."

Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "Do over!"

"Race issue," meant arguing about who ran the fastest.

Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in
"Monopoly."

Catching fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening.

It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends.

Being old referred to anyone over 20.

The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was
cooties.

It was magic when Dad would "remove" his thumb.

It was unbelievable that dodge ball wasn't an Olympic event.

Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a
slingshot.

Nobody was prettier than Mom.

Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.

It was a big deal to finally be tall enough to ride the "big
people" rides at the amusement park.

Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.

Abilities were discovered because of a "double-dog-dare."

Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute ads for action
figures.

No shopping trip was complete unless a new toy was brought
home.

"Oly-oly-oxen-free" made perfect sense.

Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down would cause
giggles.

The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.

War was a card game.

Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.

Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a
motorcycle.

Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin.

Ice cream was considered a basic food group.

Older siblings were the worst tormentors but also the
fiercest protectors.

Lately for some reason I have been thinking about my childhood and how simple it was.

Amen!! The Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid, now that was a reason to get up early on Sat. mornings!! Now I put them on once in a while, and think, what the heck is this?? Guess I'm just getting old.

Also, when you were outside playing and got thirsty, you just drank from the garden hose!! Does anybody even do that anymore?

Nobody even heard of ADD or ADHD. Kids were just plain hyper!!

The part of no bills, payments, hassles, worries etc., that part of a kid I like and miss.

Otherwise I am happy as an adult.

Being a child can be difficult, too.
And, like, Mickey, the happiest times in my life, have taken place when I was an adult; independence can be a beautiful thing

I have just one thing to say... Thank god I'm not a kid in 2010! I enjoyed being a kid in the 80s/90s.

I wouldn't want to be a kid in 2010 either. I liked being a kid in the early 60s. I remember back then it was a BIG DEAL to have a color TV...and I remember as a kid I'd always look forward to The Wonderful World of Disney as there was so much panoramic color on the show.

Remember having only 3 channels plus UHF?? And when you actually had to get up off your butt to change the channel?

Or...when there was something worthwhile on TV?

I sooooo miss the 90's. So much...I want to buy a Hot Tub and turn it into a Time Machine, like in that movie "Hot Tub Time Machine".

What I miss most about being a kid is having my whole family together again. The 70's was a great decade to grow up in. I wouldn't trade that for the world. Saying that though, Tara is right. Being a child was never easy. I know it wasn't for me. And no I wouldn't want to be a kid in 2010 either.

The only bummer part about my childhood was that I didn't get a shot at yelling "Howdy Doody Time!!" in front of someone's TV and blowing out mom's ear drums.

But being a kid in the '60's was pretty cool. The best Saturday morning cartoons EVER were on during that period. So was Batman twice a week. You actually had a GOOD REASON or two to wake up on Saturday mornings and an even BETTER reason to eat dinner in front of the TV (at least when Batman was on).

And so what if Linus The Lionhearted was actually a thirty minute cereal commerical? WHO CARES!!! It was a fun show and that's all we kids took it as. It really was no big deal if you didn't eat the cereals they were packaged with - but you always knew someone who did. It was the first cartoon series I really liked, and it still has a place in my heart today.

Would I want to be a kid today in 2010? Yes. There are tons of opportunities out there that I never had, either because when I was young they were "men only" jobs/careers (astronaut, banker, engineer, pilot, etc.) or because they didn't exist then. Today's preschoolers will have more career choices and have a much better future than I did.

For those of you who were kids in the 1960's you also got some of the best music ever made as well.
