Question Choosing College Program

For those of you who have been to college and/or planning on attending whether it's soon or in the near future; how did you go about choosing your college program? What steps did you take? Tell me everything.

The reason why I am asking is because I'm thinking about taking a college program but can't decide in which field I should look into. I haven't been in school for 13 years and I would like to have a college degree to better myself and of course to have a better paying job; and all of that.

I would appreciate any/all responses as soon as possible.

My situation was a bit different because I excelled in athletics and was given a partial scholarship to the local college and also put into a special program that enabled us to register before everyone else even though my grades weren't the greatest. My advice is to start light. Get used to the college atmosphere first. Come your second semester, add a bit more. For now, just take the minimum amount of credits so you are not overwhelmed.

Talking Finally Found One

I finally found the program and the college that offers it; and though it's quite far to travel, I know that it's the right one for me and that I will succeed. The program is called: Information And Library Technologies"
and the college is: "John Abbott" and I will need to take 3-4 buses to go
and come back from there but it will be worth it.

I plan on attending next fall (2007) so I have time to save money and I have bought a book which I am currently reading and find interesting called:

"The Guide To Becoming A Library Technician"

Please, wish me luck and I will keep you all posted as I go on with the whole
long process of applying and everything. I can't wait till next fall.

Wow, I'm glad you found a program . I'm looking at colleges (I'm a HS Senior) right now and I plan on majoring in political science. Careerwise I really don't know what I'll do after that.

Mine's a bit different....in terms of my undergrad, my parents pretty much said: you're going to OCC, UT, or BGSU. I was considering early childhood education, but my junior year, my history teacher tapped into a history passion i didn't even know I had, and he convinced me to become a high school history teacher. BGSU, of the three, had the best education program, so there you go.

but, now I have to go back and get my master's to keep my teaching license, so I'm starting this all over again...Currently, I'm leaning towards Criminal Justice, but I'm not entirely certain what one can do with that degree...I love law and politics, but I don't really want to be in school for the next 10 years lol

Talking This Is My Year!!

Well, this is the year when I go back to school at the college level and I can't wait. I will be applying for the program sometime next week hopefully and I hope that I get accepted. Then, I will be applying for loans/bursaries at the beginning of May and hope that I will be accepted; and once all that is done;
I will be waiting to start school late august/beginning of september.

I will keep you all posted; wish me luck!!

Say, 80's fan, do you need a degree to work in a library? I thought of getting a part-time job as one, while working my through college, or at least as a job I can fall back on.
But if I get a job to fall back on, it will be paralegal. I'm a journalism major, and also completed my TV certificate, and want to be in radio.
But for journalist, it helps to have a grasp on politics, law, economics, etc.

People don't always get it and say what do you WANT to do? But these days, the media are converging, and so many in journalism get pink-slipped. The more I know, the better able to handle the new multi-media demands.

But I really think I should ditch it all for auto-shop or dentistry! That's where the money is!

Just make sure to chose wisely.

I majored in pre-law and minored in journalism, and now that I'm about to graduate, I don't want to do neither.

I wish you a lot of luck in your endeavors, 80's fan College can be very frustrating at times (I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've wanted to drop out), but it's rewarding as well. Don't give up even though you may want to! Take classes, see what interests you...that is the best advice I can give.

I was in the psychology program for many years and although I enjoyed the classes, it wasn't something I could picture doing for the rest of my life. English and writing is my calling, so I changed my emphasis and am more content with my decision!

Again, best of luck to you!

Oh No Still Waiting....

I'm still waiting for an answer from the school; it should be real soon.
Either sometime this week or next week the latest; I'm getting anxious.

Is it a good sign or a bad one when it takes this long for a response?
I will keep you posted....

I am worried about the length of time. Can you contact them? It isn't right for them to make you wait --you have a right to be able to make alternative plans if not accepted.

As for me, Spring Break couldn't have come too soon. I am swamped. If I don't complete 12 units, I will have to pay back some of my financial aid. If I can buckle down and DO the work! I've never had this problem in the 3 years I've been to school! My time is eaten up by Journalism classes, so I couldn't do my computer classes --my mind just isn't there, to do them at all! I can finish my English and Journalism classes, which totals 9 units --but I need to write 80 more pages of my screenplay to finish that class, then rewrite them into a good script.
I am involved with student government, and my attention is there. But if my GPA drops, I cannot continue in that, nor a number of other things. Wisely, they disallow students from certain clubs and things if their GPA is low, or they fail classes. I have to drop most of my classes, as I asked for 22 units. The only reason I'd drop my upcoming weekend classes is that other events will conflict.
The pressure of the journalism classes is tremendous. Yes, I question as to whether I'd want it as a career or not, especially when I have writer's block.
