According to Myrna Kaye's book "THE INSIDE STORY OF THE AMERICAN HOME":
in early America, there was only one chair in a house. This chair belonged to the owner of the house, and no one else could sit in it. He was the "chair man." This expression evolved into one word and, hence, the term chairman of the committee, chairman of the board, chairman and CEO, etc. It was a great honor for a guest to be invited to sit in the chair. Everyone else sat on benches, stools or chests. |
