Ouestion how come both Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau did not want to do the television - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

hey i no that the original odd couple movie was a good comedy drama but i have a question how come both Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau did not do the television series they where both good, since they where the original odd couple, do you thank that they would have been better then tony randell and jack klugmen

I don't know; but it was probably because the producers wanted 2 other faces for the show. Whatever, I like Jack & Tony better anyway in the roles.

And; the movie wasn't a comedy-drama. It was a comedy.

Most movie actors don't want the burden of doing a weekly show either.

plus most movie actors don't want to do television while they're still a box office hit at the movies. Both Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were right in their prime.

TV was considered a BIG comedown for a movie actor back then, only recently have we seen these HUGE TV SALARIES so back then it was a BAD career move to go down to TV

I like Klugman and Randall better, too. But, for the Speed and Roy characters, I think the movie actors were better. They were very much New York in their personalities.

I also like Herb Edelmann as Murray in the movie; better than Al whats-his-name who played him on the series. He was funny; but I thought Herb Edelmann was also very New York-ish in the role.

You're half right, Walter Matthau was the original Oscar Madison but Art Carney originated the role of Felix Unger.

yes; but Jack Klugman was Walter Matthaus understudy; and in fact had to fill in for him at one point when Matthau was sick.
