Default Why Did Bob stop at six?

Does anybody know why the show stopped at six seasons? Was it Bob Newhart's decision or was it ratings? Kevin.

Looks like CBS stopped at 6 not Bob. See Below

72-73 Ratings-#16
73-74 Ratings-#12
74-75 Ratings-#17
75-76 Ratings-#26
76-77 Ratings-below 30
77-78 Ratings-below 30

You can see the show started to go down hill after season 3

He also wanted to quit while he was ahead. Same reason as MTM and DVD. Didn't want to go out at the bottom. Even if the ratings were loosing most of the scripts from sesaon 6 are just as fresh as season 1 and 2.

But he wasn't ahead, the show was not in the top 30. The One Year Wonder-"On Our Own" that started in 1977 and ended in 1978 had a better season than Bob NewHart at #29 and was still cancelled-lol

like I said the scripts were still good even if the ratings weren't. They also could have gone lower if they stayed for season 7. They were down, but they had a long way to go before being rock bottom.

Well we actually don't know if it was closed to the bottom since most books stop at 30. It could have been #87 or #31-lol

I wonder what it was now. GI's third season was past 30 and I was able to track that down so now I am going to search for TBNS last season ratings.

I got it from one of the GI sites.

Gilligan's Island ran for three seasons totaling 98 episodes. The audiences followed the show and it easily won its time slot every year. During the first season, January 1965, "Gilligan's Island" was #1 in the Neilson ratings, beating out the previous #1 slot "Bonanza". The second season, Gilligan's Island held #22, and its third season was #49, which was three ratings better than "Star Trek" (which ran for two more seasons

I believe Bob wanted to stop at 5, but the ratings kept him going. Look at some of the episodes from season 6 ... he was either in and out very quickly, or not in the episode at all.

Thumbs up

Bob knew when to go out on top, and with the later Newhart series (1982-90) he went out with a bang!!
