Seriously, I would be just as mad at her if I was Ralph. I don't think I would kick her out, but Alice should have realized that Her mom was mean to Ralph and picked on him WAY to much.

...her mother and Ralph don't get along that well, and puts up with it as best she can. But that's the fun of the whole situation: we know that whenever Mrs. Gibson and Ralph face each other in the same room, she's going to start in on him for whatever reason, and he'll scream at her and chase her out. I think "A Matter Of Record" is the best confrontation between Ralph and Alice's mother. We know the minute that alarm clock goes off, he'll scream his guts out at her and declare, "YOU...are a BLABBERMOUTH!!!!".
Not enough credit is given to Ethel Owen, who played Alice's mother in the "Lost Episodes" and the "classic 39". She was a good character actress who could make such a "dragon" so memorable.

This is the script. It's been available online for years and as far as I know, it's the only episode script out there:

RALPH: (Speaking into the microphone) Hello, Alice. This is me, Ralph. Alice, I'm sorry. I'm miserable without you. Please come back to me, Alice. I apologize for everything I said. I even apologize to your mother. I know she doesn't mean the things she says, Alice. It's just her nature. She doesn't mean to be mean. She's just born that way. When she says things about your old boyfriends and about the furniture in the apartment, I know that she doesn't mean to get me mad. She's just naturally mean, that's all. When she spilled the beans about the end of the play, I shouldn't've got mad at that. I should've expected it from her. I know how she is. She's never gonna be any different, Alice! She's gonna be the same old way, Alice! She's a BLAH-BER-MOUTH, Alice! a BLAH-BER-MOUTH! |

Alice should not have condoned her mother's rude actions toward Ralph.

One of my favorite episodes. I love when Ralph screams in the mother's face: "You...are a blabbermouth.........a BLABBER-MOUTH!"
