Default "You are NOT to drive OUR CAR!!!" The episode when Greg gets in trouble

cracks me up because I KNEW DAMN WELL what the parents said/meant when they grounded Greg and told him not to drive. Yes, Mike said, "You are not to drive our car for a week." but Greg of all people, should have known EXACTLY what Mike said/meant.

Would you have tried that on your parent(s) or would you know exactly what they meant and not tried to use another person's car?

If my parents didn't watch the Brady Bunch I would

Have you noticed you can't use anything said on the Brady Bunch because people will know you are lying to them? "Something Suddenly Came Up" everybody knows what you are talking about now.

I saw that ep recently, and I am quite sure that Mike's exact words were: "You are not to drive the car for a week." No real difference, but Greg does misquote him exactly on that.

One of thr true great episodes right here! I'm surprised Barry did not go on to more acting he really is quite good, certainly "the rock" of the kids. I try to tell people how good Barry and Robert are in this show and people by and large just stare at me with that... "It's just the Brady BUNCH, it's a dumb old show" look.

C,mon I mean after all what is greg going to say, he knew if he fessed up to the truth theyd ground him even further, its just that he came up with an idea that gave him an out, I mean they grounded him further anyway, but greg being greg figured if he stood by what he said that he could still get out if it, so what does he do ? he gives them time to calm down and just before bed he pays them that I think what your doing is unfair visit, greg is so clever.

Greg didn't come up with the idea, his friend did. It was his friend's car and he put the idea in Greg's head.

Greg's lying and further lying to support his first lie was a way to show just how wild and irrational teenagers can be. Even good, normal ones.

...we/my friends took out our parent's cars on a regular basis...lol. Even at 12 years of age. No wonder I passed my driver's test the first time... a lotta experience! :*)

I had to wait till 18 to have my own car (luckily enough to have moms buy), a very nice original '64 SS Impala, to get on the road myself. My dad passed away eary, but SHE knew...lol. Not all that trustworthy when it comes to vehicles...

I often think about telling her the amount of times we swiped her car, not just the one time we got it "slightly stuck"... then again, it might work against me... hehehe.

I can't believe we never got pulled over by Suffolk's finest...

I noticed that too. I was listening specifically for Mike to say "our car", he didn't, I replayed it a couple more times just to be sure. That's kind of a weird goof since the episode's theme is mentioning somebody's "exact words".

"The car" is essentially the same as "our car" since they are both referring to one distinct car.

The phrase, "Something suddenly came up", did not even come into the culture until the Brady Bunch was parodied in the 1990's. Before that if you were to use that phrase no one would have even linked it to the Brady Bunch. You could have still used it as an excuse, probably.

Not true. I watched that episode where Marcia said "Something suddenly came up" and for days at school people were using that phrase. I heard people reference the Brady Bunch whenever someone happened to use that phrase. Sometimes people used the phrase to be sarcastic. In college, someone did say that for some reason and someone else mentioned the Brady Bunch. So, that phrase was well known prior.

Now that I think about it, from Greg's point of view he almost had a case to use someone else's car. It was like a loophole. His parents had no legal right to stop him from driving someone else's car.

But from the parents' point of view, they wanted to punish him by not letting him use the car for a week. They never imagined he would borrow someone else's car because that would have been even worse, as far as Greg missing the whole point of the punishment. So they were right to extend his punishment.
