Last Sunday afternoon I bought Prince's 1985 album Around The World In A Day. Over the past few months I have added a number of new Prince albums to my collection an I've really enjoyed most of them. The only real exception is Around The World In A Day. I have listened to it three times now and I just cannot get into this album. The only songs on it that I like are "Paisley Park" and "Raspberry Beret". I would be interested in what others think of this album.

The thing about this album was that it came out in April 1985, just 10 months after Purple Rain was released. Because PR (the album/movie/tour) was such a massive success, Prince could do pretty much anything at that point and figured it would do well. He was obviously testing to see how different and experimental he could get with his audience, since ATWIAD as a whole sounded nothing like his previous albums.
So with that in mind, I liked this album not only because it was a new Prince album, but also because I admired the fact that he did such a risky album so soon after the success of Purple Rain. There aren't many artists that would make an album that sounds 180 degrees opposite of the album that they just sold 10 million copies of. I pretty much like everything except the last two songs, "The Ladder" and "Temptation." I listed the album as one of my top 10 favorites two years ago. |

I remember when the video for Raspberry Beret debuted on MTV...they hyped up the video so much and they even had it play on the hour every hour for 24 hours!!!! I remember how Prince was laughed at by critics and veejays for his "Liza Minnelli" haircut.

For anyone who is interested, this is how I would rank the Prince albums that I own. I'm not going to count The Very Best of Prince since it is a Greatest Hits collection.
1. Purple Rain 2. Sign 'O' The Times 3. 1999 4. Diamonds And Pearls 5. 3121 6. Musicology 7. Around The World In A Day |
