Default With or without commercials? what's you preference?

Just wondering what everyone thought of commercials included in sets. Personally, I prefer to edit them out, I like a pure set with the show only. However, I now that some traders go out of their way to get/make a set with all commercial breaks included. Is this purely for nostalgia purposes, or are there other reasons to keep the breaks in? preference

Just curious,

If the person making the set uses a non-linear editor like Womble or Video ReDo, commercials-out is fine. If they use a program like DVD Author, or edit commercials on a dvd recorder, I'd rather have the commercials in. Linear editors only allow edit points to be made on I-Frames (about every 15th frame in SP) and this can result in editing out some of the show, or including some of the commercial. Non-linear editors allow one to make precise cuts at any point they choose and accordingly, to nail down the edit perfectly, to the frame.

I'm not really into collecting entire sets of shows, but if I were and my standard practice for collecting has always been to see the uncut original network broadcast with commercials as it was shown originally. I only like to collect stuff
from the 1970's to early 80's for the most part so I try and find or already have most things with the old network ads still intact.

One thing I have been doing lately is I've come across some partial network episodes of shows like Family, Barnaby Jones, Fantasy Island, etc. If my partial is at least 30 minutes in length what I'll do is find the syndicated version and graft the two together to make it complete. It's a fun project I must say.

The commercials from the latter 80's to present day are alot to be left desired so I dont care if I receive something network or syndicated from that timeframe.

If it is from like 5 to 10 years ago I don't want them, I am still sick of them-lol But since I am so young I missed out on a lot of commercials and I like seeing them sometimes. My favorite thing about Original Airings is the on screen announcer on the end credits saying stay tuned for an all new Barney Miller or something like that.

My point exactly, I mean, you change the channel when the adds come on if your watching live tv, so why go out of your way to get them on a dvd?

Although, I can see ajm1972's point of view about the nostalgia aspect, but for me, since most sets out there are from US tv, and I live in the UK, there isn't really a nostalgic element there. Mabey I would think differently if it was a UK show with ad breaks from my childhood.

If I'm making discs from recordings that have commercials, I take out the commercials on the discs, but I keep the original recordings. When I was working on my Shadow Chasers set, it was so cool to hear David Hartman's voice announcing the content of the next morning's Good Morning America.

I like them in. That way, I'm sure none of the actual episode was accidentally removed along with the commercials. I always leave them in when authoring discs and put chapter points after each break.

If the show is from cable or local syndication then the commercials can be cut out

Detest commericals is probably the lightest way I can explain how
I feel about them. When I get a show or a disc of shows I want
to watch the show straight through. Not have to deal with either
fast forwarding through a commerical or worse, have that "break"
in the show just to have someone try to sell me something that
I wouldn't buy in the first place.

Some people like the commercials, especially the older ones. But
for me, I'd rather have them edited out.

Default Rant

I hate commericals.
hate. Loathe

I hate the interupption. I hate the break in mood- I hate watchign a spooky show, in the dark and then a bunch of dancing pieces of fruit pop out singing.

I hate being pushed to buy things int he middle of a show, I hate the fact shows are edited to fit more in, Like satruday night live, where on E! they are down to 42 mintues of an hour and a half show, so some idiot can try to sell me a new cheeze whiz brand. or a new toy.
I really really hate the ad execs that put the alcohol commericals on, so that kids are reading about drinking seeing "cool peopel" drink, influencing them-
And I dispise that they scheduel toy commericals from 3-5 becuase that is when kids see it the most-instead of using that time, to put DARE ads or abuse warnings.

I really find it terrible that no station has YET to use the broadcast abilities to post things, like missing children alerts, only things that will make money.
And that things liek AMBER alerts aren't AUTOMATICALLY put into a show, where as the newest improved toothpaste is.

There are some comemricals I find funny, or remember fondly- and I have a 3 discs set of commericals, and old ads- I can watch for nostalgia.
But when time is short, and my attention is on something that I choose, let alone PAY for on cable stations, it annoys me, and is disrespectful of the show and my time to have to surf through the crap, and the annoying jingles
To be distracted and brought back to my original focus, all for a buck.
And if they are going to have a cpative audiance, how about using it for the greater GOOD sometime.
The public service announcments per toy ad are about a bazillion to one.
How about using that time, to help a lost kid find their way home, or an abuse wife know a help line.
Instead of where to get the newest go****m playstation game.

Now come on Savage, those commercials and promos are great. Don't you want to watch a show from 1983 and hear that for that night on August 6, there is a expected thunder storm thru the Ohio Valley, plus the fact that little Jenny, missing for two days has been found? The fact that she is now married with 3 kids is unimportant. How about that Superman with Christopher Reeves will be hitting the big screen shortly and promises to be a blockbuster.?

That's nostalgia, my dear girl.

WITH ORIGINAL COMMERCIALS??? who cares?
i mean to be honest
i have some set with
some without
and i dont care at all
i NEVER watch them EVEN IF they are there
i just FFWD through them
like 99.99% of people do
i have NEVER gotten and NEVER will get
these people who ONLY want something with the original commercials

WHY? does it make the show better?
and most w/o/c are lesser quality than later syndicated copies

Lesser quality copies are always more popular than good syndicated copies to a trader who collects w/o/c
