Default Lucy Meets The Honeymooners

Do you think the idea was ever brought up on either side? I mean, for two shows on the same network with so much in common, a collaboration like that would've been a "riot" so to speak. Imagine the schemes Ralph and Lucy would've cooked up together, or just a single conversation between Norton and Fred. But with Lucy being filmed in Hollywood and the Honeymooners in New York, it makes you wonder who would've traveled where, and who would've been the guests on which show. Would the Lucy cast have been guest stars on the Honeymooners, or would Ralph & company have been the guests on I Love Lucy? After all, I Love Lucy had a lot more special guests than the Honeymooners did. Let's not forget though, I Love Lucy aired after it was filmed, while the Honeymooners aired live. Gleason wanted spontaneity, but the Lucy cast was used to a lot of rehearsal. Kind of interesting when you think about the whole thing.

Too bad we never got to see it happen though, I guess the closest thing we'll ever get is Sheila MacRae's guest appearance on I Love Lucy or Gleason's cameo as a bus driver on Here's Lucy. Share your thoughts.

Or Gale Gordon's appearance as Mr. Marshall on the 1977 Honeymooners Christmas Special, in which he did a cute in-joke about (I.I.N.M.) a scatter-brained red-headed secretary.

not technically the Honeymooners, but wasn't there a special where Lucy meets Jackie Gleason?

Yes, as I mentioned, on Here's Lucy, Gleason made a cameo appearance as a bus driver named Kramden in the episode "Lucy Visits Jack Benny."

That's correct. In fact, the original script did not even have Gleason in it. I believe it was kept a secret from Lucy as a surprise. You can see the look on her face. She looks like she did not expect it at all.

That's "Three for Two". Lucy did a number of TV movies in the 1970's. She did one called "Lucy Gets Lucky" co-starring Dean Martin and 2 others with Art Carney: "Happy Anniversary and Goodbye" and "What Now Catherine Curtis?"

Greg, I seemed to recall reading at that time that Gleason made that cameo has sort of a "thank you" to Lucy for appearing on HIS variety show. If he turned it into a surprise walk-on, that REALLY made it a "thank you". Maybe she appeared on his show waiving a fee, and vice versa.

I wonder if deep down inside Lucy was a Honeymooners fan, or Jackie an I Love Lucy fan. It'd be interesting to hear opinions from both sides.

I honestly believe there was admiration on both sides. Gleason told Morley Safer on "60 Minutes" that Lucy was the second person to call him "The Great One". The first was Orson Welles.
