Default Michael Pearlman/Jason Pembroke appreciation post...

Hey yall! I haven't dropped by in waaay too long, but...

I know I really enjoy watching charming and hilarious little Michael Pearlman as Jason Pembroke on Charles in Charge--he has brought me many a good laugh and a good cry every once in a while as wll. Also, I find it amazingly wonderful and nice of Michael Pearlman to come by every now and then and drop us a line even though he really has nothing to do with the "business" anymore.

So for all of you that have been touched by Michael Pearlman in some way like I have, please share a "Jason" moment (doesn't have to be long) from Charles in Charge so that we can show Michael how much we appreciate his work. Thanks, Michael! And come on guys, there are a TON of awesome Jason moments!!!

I'll go first:

If you saw the DVD version you'll know about this one--> it's really sweet on the episode "The Commotion" when Jason is upset because his parents are fighting and Charles asks Jason if he loves him, and Jason won't say it at first but then Charles picks Jason up and brings him off to the side and asks him again and Jason says yes he does love Charles. It's very sweet and touching for a little boy to say that to a "big brother" type of person. Always makes me smile

I'm only two years younger than Jason. In 1984 he was ten years old and I was eight. When the show first aired way back in the day I really could relate to Jason because he and I were so much alike. We even looked a litte bit alike. Jason played soccor, as did I. Jason was short for his age, as was I at the time. And Jason and I had very similar personalities. I even had a problem with a school bully like poor Jason did in the episode "Extracurricular Activity". Infact, my bully problem took place at the time that episode aired and I followed the advice that Charles gives Jason about standing up to the bully. And it worked too. When I watch the Pembroke episodes as an adult, seeing Jason reminds me of the boy I was in 1984 and 1985. It is like looking at an old photoalbum. So, that is my Jason story.

I also enjoy seeing Michael's posts on this board. It is nice of him to stop by every so often and share his experiences of working on CIC. So I want to thank Michael for that. And, of course, for giving us Jason Pembroke.

all of my favorite Jason moments occur with Charles. Michael and Scott just had a special connection as actors and you could see that on-screen.

My favorite Jason moment was during "Charles R Us" after Jason has been accused (and cleared of taking Douglas' money):
Jason: so, so, so, Charles, you look like a man who has something to say to me. Could that be true?
Charles: (mumbling) I'm sorry, Jason.
Jason: (cupping his ear) I can't...hear you.
Charles: (louder) I'm sorry, Jason.

Michael's delivery was so perfect, he was always spot on with his delivery and that's what made his lines work. That's why even though this wasn't a "special" moment or a moment with alot of emotion, just the pure element of two actors bantering back and forth, makes this scene my favorite.

I liked every scene with Charles & Jason. In my opinion, those were the best.

I just thought of another Jason moment that I just loved. During the episode where the parents are fighting (I can't remember the name of it offhand) and Jason and Douglas are eavesdropping outside their bedroom door, Jason tells Charles that their dad just called their mom "Jillian...he never calls her Jillian unless he hates her." Charles assures him that he's just mad, when parents are mad they call you by your longest name. Jason thinks about it and agrees, "you're right, when my mom goes 'Jason Michael Pembroke!', I'm a dead beagle." that always makes me laugh.

Here's another (I'm just full of them tonight): during "The Wrong Guy" when the parents are waiting for Lila to get home from her date, they're yelling at Charles for not telling them that she had a date with Van by herself instead of in a group like they thought. The boys are listening up the stairs and when Lila comes home, Stan tells them to go to bed and Jason boldly tells him, "I refuse to go to bed while Charles is getting yelled at." Stan yells "bed!" And the boys race to their room.
that scene just showed how much Jason loved Charles and how loyal he was to him. I loved that.

I love the episode "The Wrong Guy". I think that is one of the greatest episodes of the entire series. It is an episode with a lot of great humor and a lot of heart. The last scene between Charles and Lila is just so touching.

I have another moment!!!

It's from the last episode "Meet Grandpa" and Jason and Charles are "shaving" and Jason and Charles share a bit of a moment. Charles tells Jason that Gwendolyn is twice as old as him - Jason is 10, and Gwendolyn is 20, so when Jason is 20, Gwendolyn will be 40, and when Jason is 40 Gwendolyn will be 80! It takes Jason a minute, and then he goes, "Wait, she's only 10 years older than I am!" It was cute and again shows Michael's impeccable comic timing.

And then who can forget later in that episode when they tell each other good bye, and Jason tells everyone to turn around, and then Charles picks Jason up and hugs him real tight. They're both smiling, and it just looks so real and sweet, like they're really going to miss each other in real life. Who doesn't tear up at this moment??!!

The goodbye scene between Charles and Jason is really touching. This is a perfect example of the bond between Charles and the Pembroke children that was so often missing between him and the Powell kids.

Two weeks ago I watched "The Wrong Guy" for like the 100th time and I still love that episode. That scene between Charles and Lila is SO touching.

The only part of that episode that I don't like is when Charles gets yelled at. However, it is nice to see the loyalty that Jason has towards Charles, when he tells his mother he refuses to go to bed ever again if Charles gets yelled at anymore.

I am always touched by Jason's loyalty to Charles in that episode. It is also really moving when Charles tells Jill and Stan that "I love your children too."

actually he said, "I love THE children too". When Scott said that line, you could practically hear the tears as he struggled not to cry. I loved the Pembroke season for that reason....they all really loved each other.

I am from the UK and season 1 was the only CIC season that was ever shown in England and it was very popular.

My Jason moment is simply that his relationship with Charles was seemed so genuine and touching that it made me think that if an adult could be like that with a kid outside of his own family ie give time and effort and recieve respect and loyalty back then that was a very rewarding thing.

Therefore, I decided to volunteer to help children within youth work and have been doing it ever since.

I have never though, forgotten how CIC and particulary Jason and Charles were responsible in part for me doing this so long ago.
