audience, because of all the yelling and screaming when Trixie walked in the Kramdens apartment. What in the hell did she do to receive such a LIVELY applause?-lol I'm confused

the audience was probably told to do that when the she/the actors came out...it's not unusual for the stage assistants to tell the audience to "clap" or "cheer" at certain times.

Well that had to be what it was because I thought they would only go crazy when Raplh or Norton came in the door-lol

They also had those little "Applause" signs above the stage that lit up at the right moment.

Check out the Christmas episode, that should be proof enough that it was filmed before a live studio audience.

I'm not sure if they had those APPLAUSE signs YET. I know having been to taping of shows they do have those applause signs, but i don't think they were at that period of time. Does anyone know for sure?

Yes, the "APPLAUSE" signs were very much in use then. They go back to the days of radio broadcasts that had live audiences. However, Gleason didn't like them and he ordered them not to be used. He felt the audience should respond naturally. I can attest to that, having attended several tapings of "American Scene Magazine". The signs were there....but were never used.

Joyce Randolph told me on the telephone one time that the audience response wasn't planned - in some episodes they go wild and others there is not a response when someone walks on at all. She told me that when the 39 were filmed, they were filmed in front of an audience twice a week -- Tuesday and Friday.

....the 39 filmed epsiodes were staged before a live audience in the Adelphi Theater (eventually demolished and forgotten) in New York, twice a week [Tuesdays and Fridays] from August 1955 throuugh February 1956.
