Oprah Winfrey says she is not gay - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. television talk show queen Oprah Winfrey on Monday moved to quash rumors about her relationship with her best friend, saying she is not gay.

In the August issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, the TV star says some people misunderstand her close friendship of 30 years with Gayle King, an editor on the magazine often seen with Winfrey in public.

"I understand why people think we're gay," Winfrey tells the magazine. "There isn't a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it -- how can you be this close without it being sexual?"

In the article, Winfrey and King, who is divorced with two children, discuss their 30-year friendship and "four-times-a-day phone calls."

The friends say they would have no problem telling the public if they were in a sexual relationship.

"The truth is, if we were gay, we would tell you, because there's nothing wrong with being gay," says King.

King says the rumors used to bother her as "it's hard enough to get a date on Saturday night" but said she doesn't care anymore. Winfrey, 52, who has never been married, agrees.

"I've told nearly everything there is to tell. All my stuff is out there. People think I'd be so ashamed of being gay that I wouldn't admit it? Oh, please."

This seems bizarre to me. I've never read a single story that Oprah and Gayle were gay. Oprah's been with Stedman forever. Oprah acts as if she's the only woman in the world who's ever had a superclose best friend.

She's denying something that she hasn't been accused of. Seems so silly.

...Oprah tried to make her a talk-show hostess with a short-lived series of her own (produced by HER company, of course) a few years back.

Oprah Winfrey may be many things, but I don't believe she's gay.

Gayle and Oprah are together like white on rice. They are best best best friends. Only if you know Oprah and follow Oprah, only then do you know abt her relationship with Gayle.

Why is it that two people who are best friends are always accused of being gay? This rumor has been going on forever but only has it been refueled since Gayle's divorce. Oprah and Gayle have been accused many times of being lesbians and it is getting tiring.

The one who is gay is Star Jones husband.

Irene, I don't know about Oprah, because I don't watch Oprah or follow her every move. Besides, Star Jones husband could be as gay as Gayle King for all we know. There is no proof of it whatsoever on either side.

I don't follow Oprah's every move either...but the media sure does and one can't help but know so much abt her with the media telling us everyday via a news source or entertaiment news. I don't even watch daytime t.v.

I stand by my Star Jones husband comment.

I can understand someone not knowing who Gayle King is, especially a man. I just asked my husband, and he had no clue either.
