Post Jumping on the little riddle bandwagon...

Thought I'd try out a riddle, too. So far in my life I've only asked two people this riddle, my dad and my sister, and it only took them a few moments. But when my fifth grade teacher asked our class... it took us six months. So...

The man pushed the car up to a motel. When he looked at the motel, he realized he was broke.

It's not a question.. just... explain it. What was it that made him realize he was broke?

"I do like the show.... It's fun to do. I like the character of Charity because she's so hopeful. She's never bitter. There's plenty of things that happen to her that could make her bitter. But she always thinks tomorrow's going to be beautiful. And someday it will be."
- Gwen Verdon

"The advertisements for the show say 'Gwen Verdon as Sweet Charity.' Note that as 'as.' Not 'starring in' or just plain 'in' or even 'in the new musical,' but 'as.' She is that girl. She is Sweet Charity and forever will be."
- Charles Burr

Um, the price tag of the rooms on the motel sign reminded him he had no cash? I have a feeling we might need some hints on this one....

Nope. I can't think of any hints at the moment, but when I do I'll post them.

Could we ask questions? If we could what do you mean by broke? Do you mean that he doesn't have any money or some other meaning of broke? I don't know I'm not quite sure. This probably doesn't make any sense but did the car roll on him and he realized he was broke because it rolled on him because he had got broken.... no that can't be it.

No, by broke I mean he had no money. Think outside the box. Think about what's involved. Yes, you can ask questions.

Oh um maybe the he you are talking about is the car not the man and the man realized that his car was broke since he had to push it to the motel?

Maybe the man lost his wallet trying to push his car to the motel? Oh and why is he pushing the car to the hotel? It's not working but could I ask what happened to it? I don't know if it'll help but maybe?

No, he didn't lose his wallet pushing his car to the motel. I can't tell you why he was pushing the car, but nothing "happened" to the car. It was always in the same condition as it was when he was pushing it to the motel.

I would say it was one of two things.

1. He didn't have enough money for gas in his car, that is why he was pushing it. And if he didn't have the money for the gas then he didn't have the money for a hotel.

or

2. His name was Broke.

Nope.

Everyone, think outside the box. I said earlier to think of what was involved. I can't tell you which of the things that are involved you should think about or I'll give it away, but it's more than one thing.

Is the man playing Monopoly? lol. But then I suppose he would have pushed his car up to a hotel, not a motel. But monopoly would be a situation where the guy might end up landing on a space and having to pay out the nose but not have money for it. 'Cause, I would think that most normal human beings in the real world would be aware of whether or not they were broke and wouldn't even have bothered to go to a motel if they knew beforehand they were broke. Oh well, at least it's "outside of the box!"

You're right with Monopoly! I thought it was hotel, too, but my teacher told it (and wrote it) with motel. And I don't have Monopoly so I didn't know. But you're right!
