Default Inconsistency

I was watching the ep today about the play where Beav has to kiss a girl. Miss Landers says that she would have cast Gilbert but he kept giggling. The other teacher says "yes, i had his father and he did the same thing."

Well, wasn't Gilbert the new kid in town cause his father was a musician who was always traveling around. Never mind that his name was Gilbert Gates in the first ep.

Anyway, how could the other teacher have had Gilbert's father if he wasn't even living in Mayfield

Good catch! Also, Gilbert's last name was 'Harrison' is some eps and 'Bates' in others.

Is it Harrison in some eps? I'll have to look for that. I just noticed the Gates/Bates thing.

On the first episode with Gilbert, I think it was on last week, Gilbert is the new kid in town and steals Beav's friends, Whitey and Larry. They push Beav down when he goes over to play football with them and he comes home crying and Ward tells him to go back out there. And Beav gets into a fight with Gilbert and then Gilbert's father comes out and explains to Ward that he is musician who travels around a lot and that Gilbert is always the new kid.

I don't think it's actually said that Gilbert's father was not in Mayfield when he was growing up . Indeed, since that family apparently stopped relocating so often, maybe Mr. (G,B)ates found a lasting position in his old home town .

As far as names go, the inconsistencies are just easy to ignore. It is just interesting though, to longtime Beaver fans, how some of the same names are selected for minor or one-shot characters. Wasn't Harrison the name of the hostess of the Mother's Club tea, where June didn't wear the wild blouse Beaver gave her after saying she would? There is at least once when June is talking about babysitter for Beaver where she says she will get 'Mrs. Bronson,' her own maiden name. The name Henderson comes up several times; Wally's coach, the judge who was "part Indian" (1/8, maybe 1/16) who Beaver wanted to do a rain dance to cancel Kite Day ; and also some friend of Wally's, but I forget the circumstances. And Boothby is the name of a colleague of Ward's and the girl Wally is thought to be getting too serious about, and then it's the name of one of Beaver's rarely seen friends, Alan, who goes on the campout to Mt. Grover and is one of the guys who calls Don Drysdale.
