Have you ever played any sports?

When I was in early elementary school I played tee ball and soccer but I was not very good at it at all. I didn't really give a lot of effort.

I was on the wrestling team in 6th grade but I was absolutely horrible. If I had a workout regime, I would have done better. I am really glad the coaches had a lot of patience with me considering I didn't even pin down anyone (opponent or a teammate in practice) once.

But in high school I found my calling. I played three seasons on my school's softball team. The first year, my sophomore year, I played about three games in the outfield. The last two were as catcher. I am a switch-hitter. I had a lot of fun back then, especially when we reached the playoffs. I got a real good idea of what baseball players go through when they reach the postseason. Everybody has to step it up a notch.

I have no plans on going pro in any sport. The softball I played was slo-pitch and my hitting skills have gotten rusty. I've devoted my time at my community college to finishing my general ed (I completed that in May) and taking classes for my major in preparation to a transfer to a four-year university.

I started playing basketball in 4th grade. I was good but I wasn't that tall so that didn't help. I quit in 6th grade and took up bowling. Now that I grew to 6'3", I wish I stayed with basketball though I'm still pretty good at bowling.

I pretty much played every sport as a kid, but the only organized sport I ever played was basketball. Well actually, I was on the soccer team for a day, but quit because I didn't have the proper equipment, and was embarrassed because I was the only one who didn't.

The organized sports I have done our soccer, basketball, swimming, and track. I hated swimming and track but I loved playing soccer and basketball, although I was never that great at basketball.

I played soccer during elementary school. And I played tennis this past year and will play again.

I played little league baseball in 5th, 6th and 7th grade.

I was on our freshman football team--rode the bench all season. (At least Rudy got in on one play!)

I did track two years in high school.

So much for organized sports.

On my block we played wiffle ball, touch football and half-court basketball in someone's driveway--knock-down drag-out contests that would go on ad infinitum, until it was too dark to see the ball. Some of the touch football games, the only way you could see the ball when it got dark was the reflection of the street light on the top of the ball. If not, you'd get a spiral right in the face.

I loved all these activities but was not very good at any of them. I was a 'late bloomer' in coordination, by the time I was in my late teens and early twenties, I was too old for most organized sports.

While I wasn't any good in my younger days, sports were a great experience. In football--and in track (at least at my school) especially, the comradery and team spirit was phenomenal. Excellence, honor, integrity, and a winning attitude were expected and for the most part, achieved--be that on the field or in the classroom. It wasn't perfect, and neither were we, but the standard was there, and we respected it. This was in New Jersey in the 1960's; some of the greatest times of my life.
