....that dang theme song! I may be in the minority, but I disliked the theme. It sounded like they just went to a school and gathered whatever kids they could find and asked them to scream their lungs out. lol

I preferred it to the start of season 4,when Valerie Harper looked so gaunt and ill,thank goodness they changed it,to fresher healthier pics a few episodes later!

They tried to make it too much like the MTM opening, hat tossing and all. Yes, they COULD have been more original...

I think you're missing the point slightly. From day one, long before anyone had thoughts of giving Rhoda her own show, Rhoda always had a side to her that showed that she wanted to be more like Mary Richards. Call it admiration or call it envy, but as much as Rhoda was trying to straighten Mary out of her naiveté, there was always a part of Mary that Rhoda admired/envied. Whether it was Mary's career, body or the attention she'd get from men, Rhoda always wanted a piece of that and that was a part of her comedy, her insecurity and her self-deprecation.

I view the opening theme to Rhoda as an expansion of that, Rhoda trying to be Mary Richards but never, ever quite getting it right. Along the way, Rhoda learned it was better to be the best Rhoda she could be instead of a bad copy of Mary, but that evolution took years to come about.

In any case, the opening theme wasn't due to lack of originality. It was a true reflection of the character. Rhoda was on her own and couldn't get by anymore by trying to be like Mary. She had to develop her own strengths as a character and as a show. Her tossing of the hat like Mary in a clumsy way personified that perfectly.

If you ask me, the opening theme was VERY original, indeed.

That's what I got from the close of the opening also, I said to myself when watching it-"I guess she was supposed to be the Flipside of Mary"
