They were both preety famous before the Odd Couple. Tony Randall was in many Broadway shows and movies and Jack Klugman was on the Odd Couple on Broadway with Art Carney, he was in many other things too. Maybe he just wanted to learn from them. On almost ever show they go to another set. I know I read in Jerry Mathers book that they would go to other sets, mostly westerns with Old Old men. It's a learning experience.
