Default Should 9/11 be made into a national holiday?

I hate to use the word holiday, because I associate that with happiness, but a day of rememberance. A day where all federal buildings are closed for business. Maybe a day where kids are off from school. What does everybody think about that? I guess I'm a little torn on it.

I say no, there's no Holiday for Holocaust survivors and victims and there's no Holiday for slavery. What's to celebrate, you could have a day of remembrance but we do that anyway.

Ditto, plus it's too close to Labor Day. Anyway, we shouldn't commemorate 9/11 with a day off anymore than we should do so with April 14 (the day Lincoln was shot), December 7 (Pearl Harbor), July 24 (the start of the riot that killed Detroit in 1967), or November 4 (the seizing of the U.S. embassy in Tehran, although I'm sure that's a celebratory holiday in Iran).

Patriot Day is actually April 19, the anniversary of Lexington and Concord. It's a state holiday in Massachusetts.

I can see it happening in 50 years or so, but I don't think we should have it.

That's how I feel. I offer a moment of silence and prayer on that day. It's still hard to believe that it actually happened. Every once in a while, it hits me almost as if I'm hearing it for the first time.

Pearl Harbor Day is remembered on the calendar as a day of observance. No to 9/11.

If you did that, then someone would say, "What about Pearl Harbor?" Or "What about one commemorating vietnam veterans," etc.

I think we should all observe a day of remembrance and if so compelled, offer a prayer for those who died that day and another for our soldiers fighting in the middle east.

The counter-argument for Pearl Harbor Days and such is that there's Memorial Day and Veteran's Days...whereas those who died on 9/11 were civilians killed in a terrorist act.

Still, I don't think a day set aside for 9/11 is a good idea, just yet anyway.

But Pearl Harbor day does have its own day set aside. It is set apart from Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

It's not an official holiday though.

True

My only concern is years and years down the line when our great grandchildren and great great grandchildren are around, will they still remember.
