I think the poobala list is great, but that wikipedia list leaves a little to be desired.

I just ran across this page by accident, and I gotta tell you it's very interesting.
Of course the terminologies of what shows are spinoffs and which are series revivals and so on can be debated. Where have I seen debates like that, hmmm? Anyway, the guy who did the list is very humorous at times and the crossover listings is pretty large and impressive. Go check it out. |

I'm confused... why wouldn't 'Good Times' be considered a "spin-off" from 'Maude'? Esther Rolle's character Florida "spun-off" from one show into her own series.

Because Good times was based on the Life of Creator Eric Monte growing up in Chicago. The Florida Character was WRITTEN off Maude so that the actress, Esther Rolle could star in a New Comedy. There probably was an error in the naming of characters on Good Times because the guy who played her husband on Maude didn't have the same name on Good Times. And that was supposed to be the case with Rolle's character on Good Times. If you look t her laat appearance on Maude, The character was leaving to become a Housewife in NY. Her last appearance had nothing to do with going to Chicago. So that's why there is no connection between Good Times and Maude |

Esther Rolle was still playing the same character, even if the locale and her husband's name were different on the latter than what was established on the former. I'd say that was more a case of poor continuity... something that unfortunately plagued a lot of TV shows prior to the '90s (even shows like 'Golden Girls' suffered the occasional continuity gaffe into the '90s). |

There wasn't any poor continuity because GT was created long before Esther Rolle appeared on Maude. GT was created in 1971 by Eric Monte. Esther Rolle and John Amos was WRITTEN off Maude not SPINNED OFF Maude. Big Difference |

So basically what they did was, they used what was already a well-known and beloved character and inserted her into a show they were already developing -- to get it launched? Sounds like 'Good Times' had a more interesting history than I ever realized.

Yes that's what they did. She was INSERTED in a show that already had been developed. I been trying to explain that to several people on this site for years but no one wants to believe it's not a spinoff.-lol |
