Default New puppy!

Me and JOnathan are getting a Doxen puppy. When we get it, it will be 6 weeks old. I know absolutley nothing about dogs, but I know there are quite a few animal lovers here, so maybe you could possible help me out..

when/what shots do we need to get him and when?
we are wanting to get him fixed, when is the appropriate time to do this? do I have to go to a vet, or do animal shelters do this as well?
any advice??

i'll post pictures when I can get 'em!

Congrats on the new member of the family coming soon!

When we got our dog, he had his first set of shots already. However, we did take him to a vet within two weeks and they told us when shots would be necessary and so forth.

There are some places that will neuter/spay for free...some do it on a scale, depending on your income. Check in the yellow pages in your area and make some calls and find out. Or, better yet, check with a local vet who may be able to tell you who does it for free or real cheap.

Congrats on the new pup, Shots wise, if he hasn't had his shots already, he'll need a Rabies shot and a Distemper shot, that should be all.

Also when you get your pup, when he poops make sure he doesn't have worms, because a lot of pups are born with worms. So you might thave to de-worm him, you can get worm meds at your local walmart or petsmart.

When you take your pup to the vet, they'll help you with all of that.

Congrats on the puppy. Dogs are so loveable. Training them is a bitch, but otherwise, it is worth the work.

As far as shots go, the vet will go through it's series of what it needs. You don't have to worry about that. As far as getting fixed, it's best to do it around six months. I've always gotten it done around the time my pets need their shots ( my dogs were young adults when I got them ) and got it done all at once..so I usually paid around $115 w/shots for a a male. For a female it's a little more for a female given that it is a more serious surgery. As far as worming goes. Get it done with your first round of shots. A lot of over the counter stuff DOES NOT WORK. Plus you will probably pay less for it at the vet.
