"Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" dates back to 1971 and really made the genre mainstream.

Well, I've always heard that Birth of a Nation is pretty racist, but without seeing it, I obviously don't know for sure on that one...also, what about the use of black-face (ie, Jazz Singer?)...not suree if that answers anything, though...

Not quite sure of your question. Are you asking what movies depicted African-Americans in a negative stereotype way, or are you wanting to know what movies started with an all African-American cast or as they were called "race movies" which were films made for a black audience. Or the Superfly/Shaft era? Here is a website that may can help you: http://www.africanamericans.com/Films.htm TCM did a month of Black films and it was a real education and their was a night where they talked about some of the racist things that films like "Birth of A Nation" used in films like that. They showed several of these films, and for the most part, I think you have to remember that it was that era, and yes it was racist, but I think if you see the film you should make your own judgment. |
