Default Partridge Family vs Brady Bunch

Hopefully, we can a meaningful debate here and it won't be TOO one-sided even if this is the Brady Board.
Anyway, I was raised on the Brady Bunch, but as an adult I have been "discovering" new favorites of old shows on dvd. Even if I was not brought up on certain series; like "That Girl" I found recently and it has rapidly become a fave of mine. However, my encounter with the Partridges was not nearly as positive. I thought the show was TERRIBLE. I was shocked at how much I hated it. Not only (IMO) is it not in league with the Brady Bunch, based on Season One, the Partridge Family is fairly HORRIFIC! I was surprised because through the course of time these two shows have been seen as competitors of sorts but in my mind it's not even close and is almost embarrassing how bad the "Partridge Family" was. How do you feel?

I enjoy both shows, but never understood why people want to compare them. It's like comparing apples and oranges. The Partridge plots were much more serious; the Bradys were more light-hearted.

Like when Danny was drafted? That show made me want to cry. I was sitting there with my DVD Boxset I had purchased and got some tears on it Thank JESUS for eBay. And even the songs were so horrible.....

I did like the chemistry between Reuben and Danny, they should have had a show of their own without any singing, and a totally different backdrop; but as it stands I think the Partridge Family is one of the worst shows yet I have come across in terms of trying something new.

Anyone ever see the Saturday Night Live show that had Susan Dey on it? They did a "Brady Bunch vs Partridge Family battle of the bands"...was pretty funny.

I also enjoy both shows and have all the seasons released on DVD so far. The Partridge Family of course was much more focused on the music, sometimes even more than the plotlines, but both shows are a classic in their own right. To me, The Partridge Family was a little more "in-tune" with the younger people of the time, the mentioned the word "Sex" several times during the run of the show, and in one episode even had Chris and Tracy (the youngest in the family) reading over Ruban's adult magazines

Yea, I could see the more adult themes, but as far as music, maybe b/c I play guitar but the performaces were so so far off from being realistic it was nausiating

I was a fan of THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY during its original run, while I didn't begin
watching THE BRADY BUNCH until a few years ago. I like both shows, but I
agree that comparing them is like "apples and oranges" ... not so much for the
plots as for the emphasis on music in the former. In fact, the two shows share
very little in common. One is about a single mother raising two teenagers and
three younger children (although one could argue that Reuben Kincaid was
somewhat of a father figure, I suppose, mostly to Danny); while the other
is about a husband and wife raising six kids, of various ages, from previous
marriages. So, they're really quite different.

Still I can see the comparisons; same general era, young kids singing, family entertainment.

I have to agree with you here, some of the musical prefomances were downright embarrasing!
