Today's episode was How to Spank a Star. I really marvel at how well the actress who played Paula-Poo did her role. She was so obnoxious you just wanted someone to knock her out.
And as proof of how brilliant this show is, not only was the main plot funny but the added side bit with the intercom and Alan Brady is hilarious. I love when you hear Alan say, "What should I write on the card" in that tone. |

"Paula" was Lola Albright...who rarely made appearances in situation comedies
(she was best known for playing opposite Craig Stevens in "PETER GUNN"). Unfortunately, there are still many "Paula"s in the industry today- in fact, the situation Rob faced in 1964 is far more worse these days [Oprah Winfrey and/or Barbara Walters?]. Still, I admire his courage in telling her exactly what has to be done "to insure a good show" {"Oh, I don't know- how would you like to be brought up on CHARGES?"}. If Paula HAD had her way, Alan would have found out about the "business" behind his "magic act", and he'd have fired everyone involved...AND had an affair with Paula on the side {"Tell me, how did you ever have the GALL to pull that schtick behind my back?"/"I only steal from the best..."/""You know, if I had your beauty AND my brains, Sid Caesar and Milton Berle would be NOBODIES today!""/"Who's to say you don't...Alan-malan..."/"I know when I'm being led on, Paula....but in your case, who the hell cares??!!??"}. And who's to say he DIDN'T??

wasn't there an episode of "THE NEW DICK VAN DYKE SHOW" in the 70s, that had him working with a tempermental star, also? I haven't seen that series in YEARS. (hint, hint, DVD companies) but I seem to remember that in one episode in the second season, when the shows locale switched to Hollywood.
If so, maybe Carl based it on that plot from the first one. |
