Has anyone ever been criticised because their interests are "different"? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

It hasn't happened to me a lot, but it has sometimes.

A few of the TV shows I like are different to the ones my peers like - my favourite TV shows are Frasier, Cheers and Taxi, which in my opinion, are the three greatest shows in the world.

My taste in music is also very much different to most people my age - I like music from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and don't listen to any modern music. I used to be teased about that when I was younger; when I was 11 and people found out I liked the Beatles, they teased me about that sometimes. I got into the Bee Gees when I was 12, and some people teased me about that too.

Not sure if this is what you mean or not, but here goes.

Most people my age travel to exotic locations. Las Vegas, New York, the Bahamas or they take cruises.

I prefer to go to Walt Disney or Universal Studios. I can't tell you how many times people make fun of me.

Another thing, people are always laughing at me because I like Country music. They make fun of me alot for that one.

Country music is nice. Do you know the country song "Islands in the Stream", that Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton sang? The Bee Gees wrote that one.

I love that song. It is actually one of my favorites. I didn't know that the Bee Gees wrote it. I learn something new every day.. LOL!

I love older music. I especially like the Beach Boys. I am not too familiar with the Beatles. But I love all types of music.

Oh yeah. Always listened to odd music, watched odd TV, had waaaayyyy too many tapes, tape weird stuff....etc. I've never been normal.

I've always been me. I don't follow trends. The only time I follow trends is if it's something I LIKE, not because I want to be trendy.

I learned to read at an early age (I think I was at least 3 years old). I had a preschool teacher that sat down with me and taught me to read...I also learned from reading captions on TV when I was extremely young. By the time I was in the third grade, I was reading fiction books aimed towards high school kids. I also looked through the occasional college-age book. By the time I was in the seventh grade, I'd been reading adult novels (not the XXX kind

) for a few years. I was a HUGE bookworm as a kid. I've just recently started reading again, after a VERY LONG hiatus of not really reading for leisure. Needless to say, I've missed it a lot. I was teased for being a bookworm as a kid. But, it really paid off. When I was in the eighth grade, my English teacher administered many grammar and spelling quizzes, and I was able to get out of these, since I ALWAYS aced them. Serves these other kids right for not liking to read.

I always liked TV shows geared towards an older demographic when I was a kid. A lot of my favorite 80s shows, I remember watching as a kid in their original run...Cheers being an example (I was finished with the second grade when Cheers ended for good in 1993, and I still remember it). I've been a fan of certain celebs since I was very young, and it's because of my mom. I've liked Kirstie Alley, Bette Midler and Jane Fonda since I was VERY young. I was also a Murder, She Wrote and Angela Lansbury fan as a kid too...still am, actually. Again, I have my mom to thank for it because she was a HUGE MSW fan when I was growing up. Nobody else knew about me liking MSW, so I never got made fun of for it.

Also... I have played video games since 1987. I played video games at a time when it wasn't very common to meet other girls who played video games. I got made fun for that growing up too...Whatever. Nineteen years later, I still play video games...My love of video games will never die out.

And there is something else I ALWAYS got weird looks for when I was growing up... I started drinking coffee AND loved it at a VERY young age, in 1990. I was drinking coffee long before coffeeshops were cool and long before it was cool for kids to drink coffee. Mmmmm, coffee...

You know what else I just realized? I don't know very many females who are as into TV-DVDs as I am. Tara is one female I can think of, off the top of my head. There are MANY males that post over at the TV Shows on DVD board here at SO, and I am one of the handful of females that post regularly over there.

And there you have it... That's me in a nutshell. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go finish reading Rock Hudson's autobiography.

Uh, how about all the time?

I'm not necessarily criticized for liking my favorite things, but people obviously think that I'm strange for liking them. The main one is my soap obsession, of course. Most of my friends know all about it and just joke around about it and don't really think anything about it, but there are always people who are like "You...really watch that? Like...really? Oh...kay..."

I just ignore them for the most part, but sometimes I get into deep debate over the fact that a television genre has no gender attachment.

The fact of the matter is, they're what I grew up with, so they're what I am used to. Even before I became a hardcore soap fan, I'd spend the summer days randomly clicking through "the stories," catching a triangle here, murder mystery there, botched birth here, corporate takeover there. I didn't know how to watch anything else in the afternoon. From my earliest memory ever (Christmas 1992) to right now, I've always been a soap fan. And I ain't 'shamed one bit!
