Plata, Bluegrass isn't a group, it's a genre.

I've never listened to much myself, but I think Kittflynn likes some of it. I know he likes Alison Krauss and the soundtrack to that movie whose name escapes me for the moment with George Clooney in it.

I like bluegrass music. Like Jenny mentioned and Bootsy almost mentioned, 'O Brother Where Art thou' is a good example of that kind of music and Alison Krauss is featured in many of the songs on the soundtrack. Bluegrass is a mixture of different types of music just as rock music is. Rock has roots in the blues and country and gospel mostly. Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis were country boys, born and bred, who grew up on gospel, the blues, and the same old timey country music that bluegrass is rooted in. The harmony singing and the music of the Motown groups was also rooted in gospel and blues. From there we got Little Richard to Stevie Wonder and onto The Rolling Stones.

There was a movie out about a year ago called 'Songcatcher'. It was filmed in, and was about the music of the Appalachian mountains. A young girl - about 14 years old - was one of the main characters. She sang the traditional songs of the mountains passed on through generations. In real life she is an opera singer. I'm saying that many types of music are worth giving a listen to. Don't hem yourself in or out. If you like the music on 'The Beverly Hillbillies' or the music in 'Bonnie and Clyde' or 'Deliverance' or 'O Brother Where Art Thou', chances are you'd like some bluegrass and it's variants more than you might have thought. And whatever you do, don't let a lot of what passes for todays popular country music fool you into thinking that that is what country music is all about. Many of the country stars you might be subjected to in passing are akin to the boy bands that a lot of you are anxiously wishing would go away. So don't judge a genre of music based only on the Madison Avenue standard canned and recycled, manufactured and overproduced readysale stuff thrown at you by the industry manipulators. The best music is that which is loved by the musicians who write sing and play it.
