Oh No Superboy Older Than Superman

Just as, in 1993, Gerard Christopher (who had starred a year earlier in TV's
THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY) was more than six years older than Dean Cain
(of LOIS & CLARK: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN), Tom Welling
(of SMALLVILLE) is more than two years older than Brandon Routh (star of the
new movie "Superman Returns"). Strange but true!

[For the record: Gerard Christopher (born in 1959) starred as Superboy from
1989 to 1992; Dean Cain (born July 31, 1966) was Superman on LOIS & CLARK
from 1993 to 1997. Tom Welling (born on Apr. 26, 1977) has been TV's young
Clark Kent since 2001; Brandon Routh (born on Oct. 9, 1979) plays Superman/
Clark Kent in "Superman Returns," now in theatres.]

[P.S. By the way, another actor--John Haymes Newton--played Superboy
during the first season (1988). Born on Dec. 29, 1965, Newton was also older
than Dean Cain. I always thought Cain looked too young to be Superman. No
wonder. He should have been cast as Superboy, not Superman. As far as
Routh is concerned, I haven't seen the film but from the clips I have seen I
would say that he probably turns in a convincing performance--but still it is
odd that once again they have cast a younger actor to play Superman than
the latest version of Superman when he was a boy (Welling).]

Very interesting. I always thought Dean looked more like Superboy too.

Maybe in the first season, but [as Superman] his face matured. Which is why I think he made the perfect Clark but a very weak Superman, he had too much of a baby face.

I forgot to mention that now Tom Welling is older than Christopher Reeve was
when he first played Superman, in 1978.

I hope Welling plays Superman in the future.

Virtually all the action now takes place in Metropolis, not Smallville, so even
the name of the show is no longer applicable.

That's very true. There isn't too much happening at the Kent Farm in Smallville any more.

Maybe the producers can come up with a series titled Metropolis as spin-off (or replacement if need be) of Smallville. I wouldn't mind seeing ongoing stories focusing on Lois, Jimmy, and Chloe.

That's actually the reason that the show is still Smallville. I read somewhere that Welling doesn't EVER want to be Superman.
